Prince Harry once said bringing his family back to Britain felt impossible. Just over a year later, the Sussexes arrived with their children to begin a new life there.
The return was more than another royal visit. What unfolded over the next few weeks showed how a plan developed quietly, became a family move, and ultimately tested Harry’s ties to home and the Royal Family.

In May 2025, Harry was still describing a family return to the United Kingdom as something he could not realistically contemplate.
During an interview with the BBC, Harry discussed the security concerns that had shaped his decisions about traveling to Britain with Meghan Markle, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet.

“So yeah, for the time being, it’s impossible for me to take my family back to the UK safely,” Harry said.
His concerns extended beyond the immediate future. When asked about returning with his wife and children, Harry described how remote that possibility seemed under the circumstances:
“I can’t see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the UK at this point.”

At the time, Harry’s language suggested a clear boundary around his family’s relationship with Britain. He could return himself, but bringing Meghan and their children was another matter. By the following summer, that boundary had shifted.
August 19, 2026: The Announcement Showed This Was Not Another Short Visit
People revealed that Harry and Meghan were moving back to Britain with Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5.
Their relocation was expected to begin that month and last for an extended period, with Archie and Lilibet set to start school in the U.K. in September. But the move would not mean leaving their life elsewhere behind.
Harry and Meghan planned to keep their Montecito, California, residence and vacation property in Portugal while establishing a private, non-royal home base in the country.

Exactly where they would settle remained closely guarded, along with the name of the children’s school.
The Sun identified the Cotswolds as one of several possible locations, with Northamptonshire, Windsor, and Norfolk also discussed. None had been confirmed as the family’s permanent choice.

Some of those possibilities already had personal connections for Harry and Meghan.
They had been guests at Highgrove in July, while Northamptonshire would place Harry closer to Althorp, where Princess Diana is buried. Harry had taken Archie and Lilibet to their grandmother’s grave there during a July visit.

Whatever location they ultimately chose, the plans showed that this was more than another extended stay. What they were not doing was returning to their former royal roles. Harry was coming home, but on different terms.

August 25: The Plan Had Been Taking Shape Long Before the Announcement
The speed of the public timeline made Harry’s change of direction appear sudden. Six days after the announcement, however, new details showed how long the idea had been taking shape.
According to People, the Sussexes had been working toward the move for about a year, with the children’s ages and schooling helping to shape the timing.
A source close to Harry described a process that had unfolded gradually. “Step by step, they want to be in the U.K.,” the source said. “They want to have the time and give the kids the opportunity to be here.”
There had been earlier signs that Harry was considering what a life in Britain could offer his children.

Singer Joss Stone said Harry had asked about her family’s experience after they moved back from Tennessee. Their conversation touched on schools and the importance of community for children.
Harry’s work provided another reason to spend more time in the country. His commitments included his remaining patronages and preparations for the Invictus Games in Birmingham in July 2027.

Meghan’s career could also bring her to Britain. She was in talks for a potential role in the TV show “The Gentlemen,” although no deal had been finalized.
Those practical considerations, however, were only part of the picture. Years after Harry settled in California, his connection to his home country remained deeply personal.

“Harry never really stopped missing home. He’s missed that sense of connection and belonging. Britain is still home in many ways,” a source close to the couple said.
That connection also shaped what Harry hoped Archie and Lilibet would gain from the move. He wanted them to understand the world he grew up in and where their family came from, according to a source.

Meghan appeared to see a similar benefit in raising their children across two countries. “Meghan feels very fortunate that they’re able to give Archie and Lilibet the opportunity to experience both worlds,” a Montecito insider said. The decision, another source stressed, was “taken as a family.”
Harry’s relationship with his father had also shown signs of improvement before the move became public.

In July, Harry, Meghan, and their children privately reunited with King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Highgrove. The meeting marked the first time in more than four years that Charles had seen Archie and Lilibet.
For one source, the significance of that reunion could be summed up simply: “That was a real positive.”

August 26: The Sussexes Finally Arrived
One day after more details of the planning emerged, the Sussexes’ return became a reality. ITV News reported that Harry and Meghan landed at Birmingham Airport around lunchtime. Archie and Lilibet were understood to be traveling with them.

The family’s exit from the airport was notably low-key. There was no police presence, and the Sussexes left without an escort. Their arrival was only the starting point. With the family now in the country, attention turned to what their new life would look like.

Late August: Their First Days Revealed Their English Countryside Vision
The Sussexes arrived without publicly revealing where they intended to settle permanently.
According to an August 28 Daily Mail report, the family was staying “indefinitely” in a spare house on a wealthy friend’s property near the Cotswolds while searching for a home of their own.
Despite speculation about a £12 million property, three sources told the outlet that no deal had been completed. The house hunt was still active after the family’s arrival.

Meghan reportedly wanted nine bedrooms and space for a film studio, while Harry was said to want extensive land without public footpaths crossing the property to protect their privacy. One friend described what they were seeking: “They have an English countryside dream.”
For Harry, the friend said, living in the U.K. this time would be different from his years at Frogmore Cottage as a working royal, when “the roof over his head was ultimately down to the country.”
“Now he is going to have a chance to enjoy all of the things he loves about the country, but as a private citizen,” the friend said. “They will have more freedom now – it is like finding freedom again.”

The children’s needs were another major part of the planning. Harry and Meghan had reportedly discussed the move since at least early in the year, drawn up a shortlist of schools in the spring, and viewed schools during a July visit.
A friend said academics ranked low among their priorities. Instead, they wanted a nurturing environment with a strong outdoor and sporting culture in a secure countryside setting.
“They want to put them in a secure countryside microcosm, so that they will have as normal a childhood as they possibly can,” the friend said.
The same friend connected those priorities to Harry’s experience at Ludgrove, where he and Prince William were treated like other pupils and experienced a strong sense of school community.

Meghan, meanwhile, was reportedly surprised by some aspects of British education, including Saturday classes. “They both believe in this as the best decision for the family,” the friend said.
Friends also insisted the move was not a return to the Royal Family. Harry was expected to spend much of his time with his children while preparing for the Invictus Games and continuing his work with patronages such as WellChild.
“He will be at home most of the time and he wants to be very hands-on with the children,” a friend said. “That is the whole point of the move.”
Meghan was expected to continue working on As Ever while pursuing development projects through Archewell Productions with Netflix. Friends said any As Ever material filmed in Britain would be intended for the brand’s U.S. website.
September 2: Archie and Lilibet’s School Plans Made the Move More Concrete
Within a week of the family’s arrival, details about Archie and Lilibet’s school plans offered a clearer picture of their new routine.
Page Six said the children would attend the same private prep school in Britain, which costs more than $35,000 a year. The outlet withheld the school’s name for privacy reasons.
The campus includes an indoor swimming pool, grass playing fields, AstroTurf sports pitches, art studios, science laboratories, a theater, and facilities for music and performing arts.
Archie and Lilibet were expected to begin classes that week. Privacy was also part of the transition, with parents receiving a warning not to photograph or record students.
Starting school gave the family’s return a more settled routine, with Archie and Lilibet preparing for their first term in Britain. At the same time, Meghan’s work was continuing alongside the family’s new life in the U.K.
September 2: As Ever Marked a New Business Chapter
On the same date that details of the children’s school emerged, Meghan’s As Ever brand introduced another product on its Instagram account. The September 2 post began, “A new chapter to celebrate.”
The phrase referred to the introduction of Reserve Brut sparkling wine. As Ever said the wine was crafted using the traditional Méthode Champenoise and sourced from Napa Valley.
The brand described it as being made “for gathering, toasting, and savoring life’s beautiful moments.” Reserve Brut was scheduled to become available through Wine.AsEver.com on September 3.
The accompanying images focused on the bottle. In one, the dark bottle rested at an angle in a metal ice bucket, with gold foil at the top and a cream-and-gold label visible against the chilled glass and ice.
A closer photograph showed condensation on the bottle beside a white cloth, bringing the As Ever label into clearer view.
September 2: William and Kate Chose Caution as Harry Returned
Harry’s move also created a new reality for a relationship that remained unresolved. He and William were now living in the same country again, but physical proximity did not mean their estrangement had ended.
People reported that William and Princess Catherine were taking a deliberately cautious approach to the Sussexes’ return. A source close to the couple explained why there was no immediate public response.

“They are watching this space. It’s private – they don’t feel the need to say anything or demonstrate anything outwardly.”
The source suggested that any change in the relationship would have to happen gradually. “It will be a slow build. There is a deep sense of betrayal.”

Harry had already made his own position public more than a year earlier. During his May 2025 BBC interview, he spoke about what he wanted for his family relationships after years of conflict.
“I would love reconciliation with my family… There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore… As I said, life is precious.”
There had been some progress with Charles. The July meeting at Highgrove had brought Harry, Meghan, and their children together privately with Charles and Queen Camilla. But the relationship between the brothers remained far more difficult.

An insider described the depth of the rupture without suggesting that the move itself had repaired it: “It’s so broken.” Another source familiar with both brothers said there had been “no movement” and “no contact.”

September 7: Buckingham Palace Defined What the Return Did – and Did Not – Mean
As the Sussexes settled into Britain, one question still required an official answer. Did living in the United Kingdom again change Harry and Meghan’s standing within the Royal Family?

ITV News reported that the answer from the Royal Household was no. The clarification came through a letter from Lord Benyon, the Lord Chamberlain and the most senior official in the Royal Household. Buckingham Palace released the letter publicly.
Its purpose was to restate the arrangement that had been in place since Harry and Meghan stepped away from representative duties.
