The annual gala—widely known as the “Nerd Prom”—had been underway for only about 20 minutes after the president and first lady arrived when the dramatic incident unfolded. According to federal authorities, an armed man tried to force his way through a secured checkpoint and advance toward the main ballroom before being confronted by U.S. Secret Service agents.

Investigators identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, a teacher, video game developer, and California Institute of Technology (Caltech) graduate. Officials said Allen was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives when he rushed the security perimeter, setting off an immediate law enforcement response.

Secret Service agents intercepted the suspect inside the hotel lobby before he could reach the crowded ballroom. A violent struggle followed, during which gunfire erupted. One Secret Service agent was struck at close range, but officials said the agent’s ballistic vest prevented fatal injuries. The wounded officer was transported to a nearby hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. Allen sustained minor injuries before being taken into federal custody.

Within moments, security teams ordered a full evacuation of the venue as heavily armed officers swept the hotel to ensure there were no additional threats. Although organizers initially considered resuming the evening’s program, the White House Correspondents’ Association ultimately canceled the event, citing ongoing security concerns. Officials say the dinner is expected to be rescheduled with significantly enhanced security measures.

President Trump praised the swift actions of the Secret Service, crediting the agency with preventing what could have been a far more serious tragedy. He condemned the suspect’s actions and backed the decision to prioritize the safety of everyone in attendance.

Federal investigators have launched an extensive investigation into Allen’s background, possible motives, and recent activities. Authorities are searching his California residence and reviewing writings reportedly sent to family members shortly before the incident. Investigators currently believe Allen acted alone and have found no immediate evidence of a broader plot or continuing threat.

The attempted attack has intensified scrutiny of security procedures surrounding major political events in the nation’s capital, with officials expected to review how an armed suspect came so close to one of Washington’s most heavily protected annual gatherings.

Jill Biden Reveals Real Reason Behind Hunter Pardon Decision

A question that followed the Biden family for months has finally received an answer. But before Jill Biden revealed what changed, she revisited a promise that once seemed impossible to break.

For years, Joe Biden’s position seemed unwavering. No matter the legal challenges facing his son Hunter, the president repeatedly insisted he would not use his power to grant a pardon.

When the pardon eventually arrived, it sparked a political firestorm. Now, as Jill Biden prepares to publish a new memoir, she is sharing what the family says happened behind the scenes before one of the most debated decisions of Joe’s presidency.

A Promise That Seemed Firm

Hunter Biden’s legal troubles cast a shadow over much of his father’s presidency. And through it all, the former president repeatedly said he would not interfere with the Justice Department’s work and would not use his presidential powers to protect his son.

The stance became one of the most closely watched aspects of Hunter’s cases. Supporters pointed to it as evidence that Joe respected the legal process, while critics questioned whether that position would hold if Hunter faced serious consequences.

For a long time, it did. According to Jill, that was not simply a public talking point. Joe’s repeated declarations represented his genuine position at the time.

Speaking in a recent interview while promoting her upcoming memoir, Jill recalled that her husband repeatedly said, “I won’t pardon Hunter. I won’t pardon Hunter.” Yet by the end of 2024, that promise would be broken.

Hunter’s Legal Troubles

The controversy surrounding the pardon cannot be separated from the legal cases Hunter faced. In September 2024, Hunter pleaded guilty in federal court in Los Angeles to all counts in a nine-count indictment, including three felony tax offenses and six misdemeanor tax offenses.

Prosecutors alleged that he failed to pay at least $1.4 million in federal taxes between 2016 and 2019 and engaged in conduct designed to evade tax obligations.

According to court filings, prosecutors accused him of spending millions of dollars on personal expenses while failing to meet his tax obligations, filing returns late, and claiming false business deductions.

He faced a potential prison sentence, with sentencing scheduled for December 2024. The tax case followed separate legal troubles involving federal firearm charges, keeping Hunter at the center of national headlines throughout the final year of his father’s presidency.

A Pardon That Shocked Washington

On December 1, 2024, Joe issued a full and unconditional pardon for Hunter. The decision stunned many observers because it contradicted years of public assurances.

In his official statement announcing the pardon, the former president argued that his son had been treated differently from others facing similar circumstances.

He wrote that people are “almost never brought to trial” solely over the gun-related conduct involved in Hunter’s case and argued that individuals with tax issues tied to addiction often receive noncriminal resolutions after repaying what they owe.

The president also claimed political forces had influenced the process. “It is clear that Hunter was treated differently,” Joe said. He further argued that “raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice.”

At the time, those comments explained why he believed the prosecution had been unfair. But they did not fully answer the question that many people continued to ask.

Why had he changed his mind after insisting for so long that he would never pardon his son?

A Family Under Pressure

The answer appears to have emerged during a turbulent political transition. As Joe’s presidency drew to a close, the family found itself navigating the aftermath of a bitter election cycle while facing continued scrutiny over Hunter’s legal cases.

The period also coincided with major personal and political changes chronicled in Jill’s upcoming memoir, “View from the East Wing.” According to the book’s description, the memoir reflects on the Biden presidency and its effect on her family while offering a behind-the-scenes look at life inside the White House.

The book covers everything from the COVID-19 pandemic and the January 6 insurrection to the abrupt end of Joe’s reelection bid.

The memoir also details how Jill balanced her role as First Lady while continuing to work as a community college professor, making history as the first First Lady to maintain an outside job during her husband’s presidency.

As she began discussing the book publicly, Jill found herself facing questions not only about the memoir but also about the pardon that continues to attract attention.

Jill Admits She Supported It

During the interview, Jill was asked directly whether she had encouraged her husband to reconsider his original position. She did not hesitate.

“Oh gosh. I truly supported it. I wanted him to pardon Hunter at that point, and I agreed with Joe.”

Her answer made clear that by the time the decision was made, both she and the president were in agreement. Still, the central mystery remained. What had happened that convinced them to abandon a position Joe had defended so publicly??

The Reason Behind the Pardon

According to Jill, the turning point came after Donald Trump won the election. She explained that the family’s concerns grew significantly once they anticipated a new administration taking office.

“I think that the process was not fair to Hunter. But then, when Trump was elected, things changed, and we knew that he would target Hunter, and we just could not let our son go to jail on a charge that no one would go—I mean, no one has ever gone to jail for,” she explained.

The family believed Hunter would be “targeted” by the Trump administration, and that concern ultimately helped drive the decision to grant clemency.

A Concern That Extended Beyond Hunter

The interview also touched on another unusual move made near the end of Joe’s presidency: preemptive pardons for additional family members. Asked why Joe took that step, Jill responded, “I suppose for the same reason that he felt that they would be targeted.”

When the interviewer followed up by asking whether she believed the Trump administration would target members of the Biden family, she replied simply, “Yes.”

Those comments suggest that concerns about political targeting extended beyond Hunter alone. Even so, Jill said she is not worried that publishing her memoir will provoke new attacks.

“Am I worried about it? No. But they can—look, Joe’s attacked every day… by things that are said by this administration. So I don’t think it’s going to change.”

When asked whether she feared speaking publicly could trigger additional scrutiny of her family, she added, “I hope not.” Those remarks may not end the debate surrounding Hunter’s pardon.

Hayden Panettiere’s On-Again and Off-Again Boyfriend Brian Hickerson Once Called Her His ‘Sunday Girl’

Brian Hickerson once called Hayden Panettiere his “Sunday girl” before their complicated relationship resurfaced in the weeks before her death. Days later, a judge rejected his bid to erase his felony convictions, while Panettiere’s final text revealed a surprisingly hopeful wish.

Hayden Panettiere’s relationship with Brian Hickerson had already weathered years of breakups, reconciliations and painful headlines. But in a May 2026 interview, Hickerson offered an unexpectedly tender description of the actress — one that now feels very different after the events that followed.

At the time, Hickerson said Panettiere held a special place in his heart, but he also acknowledged that their relationship was complicated. He suggested that stepping away might give her the space to focus on her future, adding, “So we probably wouldn’t be good together.”

Hickerson Once Had a Very Different Way of Describing Panettiere

During the 2026 interview, Hickerson was asked what he wanted people to understand about his relationship with Panettiere. His answer was affectionate and surprisingly poetic. “Hayden Panettiere is the sweetest thing in the world. It’s not about who you spend Saturday night with. It’s who you spend all day Sunday with. Hayden Panettiere was my Sunday girl.”

The interviewer then asked whether Hickerson believed Panettiere would be better off without him. His response suggested that he knew their relationship was complicated. “I think that Hayden is one of the most talented people I’ve ever met in my life, and I would be an idiot not to walk away from her and let her flourish in her career.”

In the interview, Hickerson said he wanted to see what Panettiere would accomplish over the next three decades of her career. “I’d like to see what she’s going to do with the next, like, 30 years of her career. She’s, you know, she’ll always hold a special place in my heart, and, you know, I hope the same for her. But, yeah, we’re just good buddies.”

Panettiere and Hickerson were first linked in August 2018, shortly after her reported separation from Wladimir Klitschko.

Their Romance Had Already Taken a Dark Turn

By May 2019, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office had charged Hickerson with one felony count of injuring a spouse, cohabitant, or girlfriend following his arrest over an alleged physical altercation. He was released after posting a $50,000 bond. At that stage, a conviction could have carried a prison sentence of up to four years, according to the 2019 report.

People close to Panettiere expressed concern about the romance. One source described Hickerson as controlling and prone to anger, while another called him a bad influence. Hickerson publicly rejected those worries and said Panettiere was happy and healthy.

Yet his legal troubles involving her continued. In February 2020, Hickerson was arrested in Jackson, Wyoming, after allegedly punching Panettiere on the right side of her face with a closed fist. He was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery and interference with a police officer and reportedly pleaded not guilty.

A later California indictment included four felony counts of corporal injury, two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one felony count of attempting to dissuade Panettiere as a witness, and a misdemeanor battery count. The allegations covered incidents between May 2019 and January 2020.

In 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse, cohabitant, girlfriend, or child’s parent. The remaining charges were dropped during sentencing.

He received 45 days in jail, four years of formal probation, 52 domestic violence classes, $500 in restitution, and a five-year protective order.

Panettiere had previously issued a forceful statement about the abuse she said she endured. She explained that she was speaking publicly in the hope that other people in abusive relationships would seek help.

“I am prepared to do my part to make sure this man never hurts anyone again,” she said. She also thanked the people who helped her regain her voice and her life.

Her attorney, Alan Jackson, described Panettiere as a survivor of years of psychological, emotional, and severe physical abuse. He said her decision to cooperate with prosecutors was part of a healing process that had only just begun.

Yet despite that history, Panettiere and Hickerson’s connection kept resurfacing.

The Relationship Was Apparently Far From Over

By 2026, the public had become accustomed to reports that Panettiere and Hickerson had split. According to sources cited by TMZ, however, those reports did not tell the full story.

A source close to Hickerson claimed the pair had not broken up as many times as the public had been led to believe and were actually together while Panettiere promoted her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in the months before her death.

The relationship was reportedly kept private because Panettiere’s team believed Hickerson was “bad for business.” The secrecy apparently extended beyond avoiding public appearances together.

That detail gave their private relationship a particularly unsettling significance. But what happened just three days before Panettiere’s death added another unexpected chapter to Hickerson’s story.

A Judge Rejected Hickerson’s Bid Just Days Before Hayden Died

On August 13, a judge rejected Hickerson’s request to reduce his past felony convictions to misdemeanors and his separate request to have them expunged. According to Page Six, the prosecution objected to both motions during the hearing. Judge Olivia Rosales denied the requests, with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirming the decision to the publication.

It was not the first time Hickerson had attempted to have the convictions reduced or dismissed. He had reportedly made a similar request in July 2025.

His petition noted that he had fulfilled the conditions of his probation. The timing was striking: the ruling came only three days before Panettiere died. Still, there is no information in the provided sources connecting the court decision to Panettiere’s death, and available reports did not accuse Hickerson of involvement in her death.

The circumstances surrounding the actress’s final trip remained unclear, including where she and Hickerson stayed and why they traveled south. His family was reportedly aware of Panettiere’s death. Then, on August 15, just one day before Panettiere died, Hickerson was reportedly the man who traveled with her from Los Angeles to the South.

And while Hickerson had publicly described Panettiere as his “Sunday girl” months earlier, someone close to her later revealed words from a very different side of her life.

Panettiere’s Final Text Was About Something Much Bigger

Musician Clayton Johnson shared a video of himself and Panettiere singing after her death, along with a deeply personal message about their friendship. “I spent last night trying to process, to try to find the right words, but there really aren’t any. More than anything, I hope you’re at peace now and reunited with Jansen.”

But then he shared something more intimate. Johnson said the last text Panettiere ever sent him was a sentence that sounded unmistakably like her:

“Honestly, people think it’s a joke to ask for world peace, but that would be me.”

Johnson said the message was “you in a nutshell” and expressed gratitude for having known her and for the memories they shared. His post ended with a simple farewell:

“Fly high, Hayden. 🤍”

While headlines had followed her relationships, addiction struggles, and painful experiences, her final words to Johnson were about world peace. But Panettiere’s death itself had already left unanswered questions.

An Unanswered Call Drew Police to South Carolina

Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at age 36 after an acquaintance reportedly called 911 to report an unresponsive woman at a home in Greenville, South Carolina.

Initial dispatch information referred to a person in cardiac arrest, and a separate report said a friend found Panettiere inside the home. Her publicist, Kasey Kitchen, confirmed that authorities were investigating. “There’s an investigation ongoing,” Kitchen said. “We should know more tomorrow.”

The Greenville Police Department and Greenville County Coroner’s Office were handling the open investigation. No cause or manner of death was immediately announced.

Police said their preliminary findings had uncovered no indication of foul play or suspicious circumstances. A source close to Panettiere also said she had complained of back pain during the past year. There was no official suggestion that the pain had any connection to her death.

Her representative remembered her as far more than a familiar face on television.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” the representative said in a statement reported by NBC News. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her, and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

Panettiere’s death arrived only months after she began discussing her private life with rare openness. Her comments covered everything from motherhood and addiction to relationships that ranged from peaceful to deeply troubling.

The Battle She Refused to Hide

In July 2026, Panettiere gave a deeply personal interview to MOMÉ magazine. She did not present herself as cured or pretend that recovery had erased the past.

Her account began with the birth of her daughter, Kaya, when a smooth pregnancy gave way to a frightening medical emergency. Panettiere experienced sharp pain in her lower back because the baby was pressing against a bundle of nerves, and she was eventually taken for a cesarean section.

After Kaya was placed on her chest, someone called a “code crimson.” The newborn was handed to Panettiere’s then-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko, while medical workers rushed to control Panettiere’s hemorrhaging.

Panettiere later learned that the strange suctioning sound she heard in the room was her own blood being removed. Seven transfusions and a second surgery were required to repair the damaged vessels and save her life.

“I closed my eyes and just prayed for my daughter to be okay,” she recalled. “I truly was ready to go if it was my time. Kaya being safe and healthy was all that mattered.”

Her emotional crisis continued after the physical danger had passed. While watching Klitschko rock their daughter in the hospital, Panettiere felt none of the instant connection she had expected. “I felt nothing,” she said. “And now I had to figure out how to bond with her. It seemed like an impossible task.”

Panettiere had imagined motherhood in detail before giving birth, including the activities she would share with her future “mini-me.” The numbness that followed left her ashamed and confused.

She said she appeared blessed on the outside while feeling empty on the inside. She began using wine to silence that emptiness, and the habit developed into dangerous territory.

“I turned to wine, which ultimately ended up leading to an alcohol dependency,” she explained. “It was how I would get through each day.”

People around Panettiere saw the addiction but did not initially understand the depression beneath it. Even after she received a postpartum depression diagnosis, she said treatment remained focused on her drinking instead of its source.

Panettiere wished the illness had been recognized sooner. Treatment helped her become sober, but she remained in denial about how much healing was still ahead.

She was actively fighting substance abuse when she agreed that her daughter should live with Klitschko in Ukraine in 2018. “It wasn’t a decision I made lightly, nor was it a decision I even wanted to make,” she said. “I knew I needed to be able to put her first so that I could get the help I needed and be the mom she needed me to be.”

Panettiere later believed a temporary separation would allow her to seek help and eventually rebuild her time with Kaya, but she ultimately signed papers giving Klitschko full custody.

“It was the worst signing those papers, the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever, ever had to do in my life,” she said in 2022.

Still, Panettiere remained in frequent contact with her girl and felt deeply connected to her. She proudly called her daughter a “mini-me.” She hoped Kaya would eventually understand why they could not always live together.

Therapy had also taught Panettiere that forgiveness needed to include herself. “You have to let go of what you wish you could change, and be present, and make the most of what you have now,” she said.

Her Final Words Now Feel Painfully Different

Despite everything, Panettiere refused to call herself a victim in that last interview. “I’m a warrior,” she declared, describing herself as resilient after surviving more trauma than she ever expected to face.

She also resisted offering a neat recovery story. “I’m a work in progress. We all are,” she told MOMÉ. “I take each day as it comes. I’m doing the work, and I’m doing my best.”

Hayden Panettiere candidly shared that she was still a work in progress during her final interview. At this event, she performed onstage with Adrian Pasdar at the "Netflix Live! Her self-care had become quiet and practical. She set boundaries, journaled, resisted the urge to please everyone, and stayed near people who made her feel safe.

Panettiere also enjoyed tea and a good book. Creating something she could bring into the world made her feel most alive, and she wanted her experiences to help others facing similar pain.

The interview closed with a question about what she would tell her frightened, exhausted younger self. Panettiere’s answer was also meant for any new mother who felt numb, alone, or convinced she was failing.

Her message was hopeful when she gave it. After her sudden death, its two short sentences feel almost unbearably poignant.

“You’re stronger than you know. And you’re going to be just fine.”

Those words reflected the survival instinct that ran throughout Panettiere’s life. The same intensity could also be seen in the way she approached love, even when a relationship left her shattered.

The Relationships That Shaped Her Private Life

Stephen Colletti was one of Panettiere’s first public boyfriends. They were linked in 2006 and dated for nearly two years before separating by the end of 2007.

In a May 2026 cover story, Panettiere said Colletti had been particularly helpful when paparazzi and tabloid attention began closing in around her. His experience on “Laguna Beach,” which he starred on from 2004 to 2005, meant he already understood that kind of scrutiny.

Panettiere described Colletti as “very protective” and said he dealt with reporters diplomatically. He showed her that boundaries could be firm without becoming rude or hostile.

Their separation was gentle by celebrity-breakup standards. “We just ended up going our separate ways, there wasn’t really a story there,” she said. “Like, no drama.”

Panettiere encountered Colletti again in 2026 after years apart and said the reunion was pleasant. Although they had not stayed as close as she wished, she remained grateful for the way he treated her.

Her relationship with “Heroes” costar Milo Ventimiglia carried a different emotional intensity. Panettiere was 18, and Ventimiglia was 29, creating a nearly 12-year age gap.

Panettiere said she entered every relationship with her “whole self” and once believed the romance could keep developing toward marriage. Still, she struggled to place the word “I” before “love you,” a hesitation she did not yet understand.

Their breakup crushed her. When asked whether Ventimiglia briefly reversed his decision because of her reaction, Panettiere answered with painful bluntness in a separate Us interview. “One hundred percent it was only because I was over the toilet, hysterically crying,” she said.

She remembered feeling as though her world had collapsed because no betrayal or explosive confrontation had warned her it was coming. According to Panettiere, Ventimiglia took the breakup back after witnessing her distress, then ended the relationship again one week later.

Panettiere later became involved with professional boxer and father of her daughter, Klitschko. Their on-and-off relationship began in 2009, and they became engaged in 2013. Panettiere and Klitschko ultimately separated in August 2018.

Between an earlier split from Klitschko and their later engagement, Panettiere dated former New York Jets player Scotty McKnight. The relationship ended in late 2012.

Sources said the pair had separated several weeks before the news became public. The breakup was reportedly friendly, and the former couple remained on good terms; one source even suggested a future reunion was in the cards.

Only months before that final journey, Panettiere had publicly put words to another part of herself for the first time.

She Finally Said It Out Loud

During her May 2026 interview with Us, Panettiere was asked whether she identified with labels such as bisexual or queer. Her answer was direct, confident, and clearly meaningful to her.

“Now that I know that this book is coming out, and that I’ve chosen to share it with the world, I’m comfortable to confidently say that yes, I am bisexual,” she said in the May interview.

“I said it! This is the first time I got to say it out loud.”

The disclosure added another deeply personal chapter to her memoir “This Is Me: A Reckoning.” After years of having her relationships examined in headlines, Panettiere was finally identifying herself on her own terms.

Her willingness to speak so plainly mattered because audiences had watched her for nearly her entire life.

A Career Millennials Grew Up Watching

Panettiere entered the entertainment business before she was old enough to remember it. She signed with Wilhelmina Models at eight months old and booked her first commercial at 11 months.

By the early 1990s, she was working as a child actress. Her career soon placed her in the unusual position of growing up onscreen while viewers of the same generation grew up alongside her.

One of Panettiere’s first memorable movie roles came in the 2000 sports drama “Remember the Titans.” Playing Sheryl Yoast opposite Denzel Washington introduced her to a much larger audience.

In 2005, she starred in “Ice Princess” alongside Michelle Trachtenberg. The Disney movie became one of the projects that made both young actresses especially familiar to millennial audiences.

Panettiere’s defining television breakthrough followed with “Heroes.” As cheerleader Claire Bennet, she became central to a hit series whose famous message about saving the cheerleader entered pop culture.

She later took on the role of country singer Juliette Barnes in “Nashville.” The performance earned her multiple award nominations and allowed her to portray ambition, addiction, fame, and motherhood with an uncomfortable degree of emotional realism.

Some of Juliette’s experiences eventually resembled Panettiere’s own life. She later acknowledged the strain of repeatedly entering those dark emotional places while filming the series for long hours over several years.

Panettiere also played Kirby Reed in “Scream 4” and returned for “Scream VI.” Video game fans knew her voice and likeness from “Until Dawn.”

Behind those performances, her private life became increasingly difficult, which she discussed in her book. It also confronted the death of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023 at 28. Panettiere later spoke about the grief and guilt she carried after losing him.

She was last publicly spotted by TMZ at LaGuardia Airport in May 2026 with a friend, shortly before the memoir’s release. She offered no major declaration that day, only a noticeable grin as she continued through the airport.

An actress who influenced a generation is gone far too soon. Panettiere leaves behind her daughter, Kaya, a body of work that shaped millennial pop culture, and the memory of a woman who kept trying to turn her hardest experiences into something that might help another person.

Our deepest condolences go to Panettiere’s daughter, family, friends, colleagues, and everyone mourning her loss.

Hayden Panettiere Once Recalled Her Doctor’s Warning That She Would Not Live to See 35 — Weeks Before Her Death

Weeks before the “Heroes” star’s sudden death on August 16, one of her final interviews revealed how close she had once come to a serious health crisis.

On the “Tamron Hall Show,” Hayden Panettiere looked back on the addiction, physical warning signs, and personal struggles that eventually forced her to confront her health.

During the May 21 interview, Panettiere also discussed postpartum depression, domestic abuse, and the pressure of growing up as a child star.

She appeared alongside her publicist and close friend, Kasey Kitchen, whom Panettiere described as someone she trusted to be “brutally, painfully honest” with her.

The Pressure of Growing up in the Spotlight Started Early

Panettiere told Hall that growing up in the public eye affected her sense of identity at an early age. She said she experienced an identity crisis when she was 12 and understood even then that those pressures could affect her later.

The conversation then moved to postpartum depression, which Panettiere experienced after giving birth to her daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, on December 9, 2014. She shares Kaya with former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Panettiere said she struggled at a time when postpartum depression was not widely discussed and when she could not find the support she needed.

She said that after an earlier rehab stay, she began self-medicating because she could not find a therapist who understood her experience.

Hall and Kitchen also discussed the domestic violence Panettiere endured during a high-profile relationship. Kitchen described how difficult it was to watch Panettiere go through the situation while some people online minimized the abuse.

Hall also referenced the legal consequences Panettiere’s former partner faced after multiple domestic assault charges. The interview then shifted to Panettiere’s 2020 return to rehab and the physical symptoms that pushed her to seek medical care.

Yellowing Eyes and Blood Tests Led to a Stark Warning

Hall noted that Panettiere returned to rehab in 2020 for an eight-month stay. Panettiere said the decision came after her health had deteriorated enough for her to see the effects herself.

“When I got to the point of looking in the mirror and seeing my eyes had turned yellow,” she said, adding that she no longer recognized her body.

Panettiere said she went to a doctor for blood tests and was warned that continuing on the same path could leave her needing a liver transplant.

“I mean, I was in the midst of so much,” she told Hall.

Hall put the warning in even starker terms: “So, you’re 30 years old, and the doctor’s telling you, ‘You’re 30 years old, Hayden. You will not live to see 35.'”

“Yeah, ‘If you do not stop immediately.’ And, I was like, ‘I can’t do that to me,’ and if I can’t do it for myself, I’m going to do it for my child,” Panettiere replied.

Panettiere Had Written About Injuries That Still Bothered Her Decades Later

TMZ reported that Panettiere had been dealing with back pain before her death, with a source close to the actress saying she had complained about it during the previous year. The report did not identify what was causing the pain.

Years earlier, Panettiere had documented another source of lasting physical pain in her 2026 memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning.”

According to The Daily Beast, she wrote that she was thrown from a zebra while filming the 2005 movie “Racing Stripes” at age 14.

The accident damaged two vertebrae in her neck and caused a concussion and severe whiplash. “Over 20 years later, these injuries still bother me,” Panettiere wrote.

The investigation into Panettiere’s sudden death is continuing, and new information is painting a clearer — though still incomplete — picture of what happened inside the South Carolina residence where she was found unresponsive.

An autopsy has been completed, neighbors are recalling the “commotion” they heard and witnessed that day, and authorities have revealed one particularly significant finding as questions remain over what caused the actress’s death.

A 911 Call, a Cardiac Arrest, and a Temporary Stay

According to Page Six, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office said a 911 call came in on August 16 at approximately 1:51 p.m. regarding a reported cardiac arrest.

First responders and Emergency Medical Services arrived at the residence and found a woman in cardiac arrest. Despite EMS personnel beginning advanced cardiac life support measures, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

The Coroner’s Office confirmed: “The decedent has been identified as Hayden [Lesley] Panettiere, 36, of California. Panettiere was found unresponsive inside the residence, where she had been temporarily staying.”

That detail is especially notable in light of what residents at the complex have since said about Panettiere’s presence there.

One neighbor, Micah Lee, told WYFF4 that he was home Sunday when he became aware of unusual activity in the building. “It was yesterday afternoon, and, just a bunch of commotion in the hallway,” Lee revealed. “The halls are pretty hollow, so noise echoes throughout.”

He continued, “And I had just heard about someone collapsing. And then afterwards there was talk about cardiac arrest. I can’t confirm any of that. That’s just what I’ve heard.”

Lee’s description lines up with the Coroner’s Office confirming that the initial 911 call involved a reported cardiac arrest, although the official cause of Panettiere’s death has not yet been released.

Police have also said their preliminary investigation did not indicate foul play or suspicious circumstances. Another resident of Judson Mill Lofts on Easley Bridge Road offered a similarly unsettling glimpse into the aftermath, telling Page Six they were stunned to discover who had died inside the complex.

“I was shocked,” the neighbor said, explaining they had never seen Panettiere there before news of her death broke. The resident said they did not know how long the actress had been staying at the property and were not even sure she had left the apartment during her time there.

According to the neighbor, management subsequently contacted residents and reassured them that the incident was not believed to be criminal and there was no reason for them to fear for their safety. “It’s still kind of jarring to hear that someone of her stature was here and then that tragically happened to her,” the resident added.

The neighbor recalled police remaining at the property for hours, from around noon until 8 p.m. that Sunday. They said seeing the coroner’s vehicle made it apparent someone had died, but they did not learn until the next morning that it was Panettiere.

There was another detail the neighbor could not forget: They noticed two men “sitting outside the apartment with cops” during the response. “They looked like they were in shock, not speaking, and had their heads down,” the neighbor recalled.

The resident also believes the apartment was being used as a rental, something Page Six reported it had confirmed as an Airbnb.

The Scene Raised More Questions

As investigators began piecing together what happened, another detail from the scene drew attention. Page Six reported that 911 dispatch audio characterized the emergency as an apparent “overdose,” while Narcan was reportedly found at the scene on a mattress.

Narcan is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, but it remains unclear whether it was administered to Panettiere.

Crucially, neither the dispatch characterization nor the presence of Narcan establishes Panettiere’s official cause of death. Authorities have said that determination remains pending further investigation and additional studies.

The actress had previously spoken publicly about her history with opioid and alcohol addiction. In a 2022 interview, Panettiere said she had been offered what she described as “happy pills” before red-carpet appearances when she was just 15 years old, according to a Page Six report about her addiction struggles.

“They were to make me peppy during interviews,” she recalled at the time. “I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction.” She later described years of struggling with alcohol, substance abuse, depression and anxiety.

Panettiere also spoke candidly about the painful decision surrounding custody of her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. Speaking on the “On Purpose” podcast in May 2026, she pushed back against the idea that she had simply chosen to give up her daughter.

“The idea that anybody would think that I would just give away my child and be OK with it is heartbreaking,” she said. “It couldn’t be further from the truth. It became this horrible cycle for years of battling depression and anxiety and alcoholism and substance abuse and just me trying to find my way back.”

More recently, Panettiere had been promoting her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning.” At what would become her final public event, held at the Harmony Gold Theater in Los Angeles on May 26, a source who attended told Page Six that Panettiere’s speech appeared “slow and slurred at times.”

Panettiere Had Endured a Devastating Family Loss Years Before Her Death

She had also been carrying another profound loss. Panettiere’s younger brother, Jansen, died in February 2023 at the age of 28 from an undiagnosed heart condition. In a 2024 People interview, she described the devastating effect his death had on her.

“He was my only sibling, and it was my job to protect him,” Panettiere said. “When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul.” She added that experiencing something so catastrophic had changed the way she viewed everyday problems.

Against that intensely personal history, speculation around Panettiere’s final hours has inevitably drawn attention, but investigators are still withholding any definitive explanation for her death.

Then Came the Autopsy Finding

And that is where the autopsy findings become especially important. Although the examination has now been completed, officials have not yet established a cause or manner of death. The Coroner’s Office stated, “This investigation remains active and ongoing. No further details are available for release at this time.”

But the autopsy did answer one major question about Panettiere’s physical condition when she died:

“An autopsy was completed today. At autopsy, no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death.”

That still leaves the central mystery unresolved. Additional testing and investigation will now be needed before authorities can officially determine exactly what caused the star’s sudden death.

Panettiere’s passing was announced by her father, Skip, who described his daughter’s demise as a devastating loss.

“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen. We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss,” he added.

Brian Hickerson and His Lawyer Issue First Statement After Hayden Panettiere’s Passing at 36 – as His Chilling Comment from Weeks Before Resurfaces – Details

The days before Panettiere’s death are coming into sharper focus, with new claims painting a troubling picture of the concerns surrounding her behind closed doors.

Hayden Panettiere’s death at just 36 has left questions that investigators are still working to answer, but attention is now turning to what was happening around the actress in the weeks and months before she died.

As her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson finally breaks his silence, several unsettling details have resurfaced, including a since-deleted remark he allegedly made online and claims that Panettiere’s own team had once discussed an intervention.

Hickerson later faced multiple domestic violence charges connected to Panettiere and was sentenced in 2021 to jail, probation and domestic violence classes. Brian Hickerson Breaks His Silence

Days after Panettiere’s death, Hickerson has now addressed the tragedy for the first time, although his response came through his attorney and offered little detail about what happened.

According to TMZ, Hickerson’s attorney, Sloan Ellis of the Ellis Hinton law firm, said, “Hayden’s death remains under investigation and it is important to allow that investigation to proceed.”

The statement continued, “As has been publicly reported, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play.” Ellis concluded, “Out of respect for Hayden’s loved ones and the ongoing investigation, there will be no further comment at this time.”

Ellis is a former federal prosecutor who has previously worked with the DEA and FBI, something TMZ noted amid reports that the DEA has joined the multi-agency investigation into Panettiere’s death. Hickerson and his older brother, Zach, were reportedly both at the South Carolina apartment when the actress was found unresponsive.

According to the outlet, Hickerson had been sleeping in another room, while Zach came inside and found Panettiere unresponsive in an armchair. First responders attempted to save her, but she was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. Hickerson reportedly became visibly emotional as the efforts to revive her came to an end.

Police have also said Hickerson showed officers a bag containing medications Panettiere had been taking before she died. As Ellis reiterated, authorities have said there are no signs of foul play, while the investigation into exactly what happened remains ongoing.

But as Hickerson’s brief statement emerged, another detail from just weeks earlier began attracting new attention.

A Since-Deleted Comment Resurfaces

A comment allegedly written by Hickerson in June has resurfaced following Panettiere’s death, and its wording is particularly striking considering their complicated history. Page Six reported that a user recently commented underneath an old Instagram selfie of Hickerson shared seven years ago, asking, “Some woman dates [sic] you???”

Hickerson allegedly replied, “Yes, it’s wonderful if she gets out of line I just Google myself and say hey stop it this is what I’m allegedly capable of [sic].”

The comment, which has since been deleted, appeared to reference Hickerson’s highly publicized legal history involving Panettiere.

His Instagram account has also reportedly been deactivated since news of her death broke. Additionally, it remains unclear whether Hickerson and Panettiere were romantically involved at the exact time the comment was posted.

However, they were photographed together in March 2026, and an August 16 police report referred to Panettiere as Hickerson’s “girlfriend.” Their relationship dated back to 2018 and was marked by several legal incidents.

Hickerson was arrested for domestic violence involving Panettiere in Los Angeles in May 2019. He was arrested again and ultimately faced eight counts relating to abusive incidents between May 2019 and January 2020.

Then, in April 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse, cohabitant, girlfriend, or child’s parent. He was sentenced to 45 days in jail, four years of probation, 52 domestic violence classes, and $500 in restitution. Panettiere was also granted a five-year protective order.

Hickerson had additionally been arrested in Wyoming on Valentine’s Day in February 2020 for domestic battery and interference with a police officer.

Court papers alleged he punched Panettiere “with a closed fist on the right side of her face.” Hickerson pleaded not guilty to those charges. Still, Panettiere later received another restraining order against him in July 2020.

Panettiere Had Spoken About Why She Forgave Him

Years later, however, the actress publicly discussed the complicated emotional cycle that kept pulling her back toward Hickerson.

Panettiere opened up about her experiences with domestic abuse in her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” released in May. She also discussed Hickerson during an appearance on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast.

“Once [Brian] was sober, that good part of him would be back, and he would see the damage he had done, and he was devastated and apologetic,” Panettiere said. She described their relationship as a “dizzying” cycle.

“And it seemed so honest and genuine that I was torn,” she continued. “I thought back to everything I’ve done wrong in the past and the forgiveness I was shown.” Those comments have taken on an especially poignant context in light of what sources have since claimed about Hickerson’s presence in her life during her final months.

Panettiere Reportedly Hired Security to Keep Brian Away

According to Us Weekly, Panettiere had reportedly established firm boundaries with Hickerson before her death, including hiring private security. A source told the publication that Panettiere sometimes helped Hickerson because he allegedly made her feel guilty by saying he was trying to rebuild his life but could not because she had “put him in jail.”

“But he would always take advantage of her and wouldn’t leave, so she hired private security to not only remove him, but to keep him away from her,” the source claimed.

Another source alleged Hickerson reentered Panettiere’s life earlier in 2026 after saying he needed somewhere to stay. “Brian said he needed to crash on Hayden’s couch. He told her that he had no money and nowhere to go because of the past criminal charges against him and he blamed that on her,” the source claimed.

According to the insider, Panettiere initially agreed to let him stay temporarily. But the source claimed Hickerson subsequently “wouldn’t leave,” leading Panettiere’s private security to become involved in removing him.

An even more unsettling allegation followed: The insider claimed that while Hickerson was living with Panettiere in Los Angeles, she discovered that “he had apparently set up cameras in her place.” The outlet also reported that the homeowners association at Panettiere’s condo building warned residents about Hickerson.

“It was at the same time that Hayden had her security remove Brian from her home and the security guard lived with her as well to make sure he stayed away,” the source stated. Panettiere’s former neighbor Mia Terrazzas also spoke about Hickerson’s presence around the actress’s residence.

In an Inside Edition interview, Terrazzas claimed she had been frightened of him. “He never stopped living at her place,” Terrazzas alleged. She further claimed, “There were times he ripped apart her bathroom, where he just took a sledgehammer at 5 in the morning.”

Terrazzas said she called 911 “at least half a dozen times” over disturbances at Panettiere’s home. According to Us Weekly, Hickerson was out of Panettiere’s life for several months earlier this year before circumstances changed over the summer.

There is also another person who says concerns about Panettiere had already become serious enough for people around her to consider taking action.

Panettiere’s Team Had Discussed an Intervention

Director Griff Furst, who worked with Panettiere before her death, recently revealed that conversations about helping the actress allegedly went much further than ordinary concern.

In an Instagram video, Furst said he had declined interview requests from media outlets because he wanted to explain his experience without having his words edited or taken out of context.

Furst said Panettiere had openly discussed her addiction struggles and noted that she began acting when she was just 11 months old. He explained that while working on a production, filmmakers can alter schedules, collect internal reports, and assign somebody to keep an eye on a performer if concerns arise.

Then he revealed what allegedly happened after filming ended. “When we wrapped, however, I stayed in touch with her team and what eventually got determined was that she might need an intervention and I was asked to participate, and I said yes,” Furst said.

However, according to him, “That intervention did not happen, at least not that I’m aware of.” Furst stressed that he had not been leading the effort and said it would not have been appropriate for him to do so.

He then addressed questions he said journalists had been asking him about “the man that Hayden brought with her,” whom he identified as Hickerson. Furst pointed to Hickerson’s publicly documented 2021 felony convictions and Panettiere’s previous restraining order.

He also stressed an important distinction: authorities have reported no indication of foul play, and Hickerson has not been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Panettiere’s death. “I wasn’t in South Carolina, I don’t know what happened,” Furst said.

He nevertheless offered his opinion based specifically on what he said he personally witnessed while working with Panettiere. Furst described seeing “somebody fighting to stay sober who deserved better company around them than what I observed.”

He added, “Hollywood has an extremely sad history of stars not getting the help that they deserve and our business has no fix for that.” Furst also said, “So our observations, they just get written down and thrown into a production report and then a year later you’re just reading the news.”

Furst ended by saying, “So I was very lucky to work with Hayden; I wish she was still here.” He also stressed that he had listed resources for people who may need help in similar situations in his caption.

A Legal Setback Came Just Three Days Before Panettiere Died

The renewed attention surrounding Hickerson also comes after one of his attempts to change his criminal record was rejected remarkably close to Panettiere’s death. According to TMZ, a judge denied Hickerson’s request to reduce his prior felony domestic violence convictions to misdemeanors and to have the convictions expunged.

The ruling came on Thursday, August 13 — three days before Panettiere died. Prosecutors opposed his requests, and Judge Olivia Rosales denied the motions. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the ruling after Page Six first reported the development.

Hickerson’s convictions stemmed from his April 2021 no-contest pleas to two felony counts following incidents involving Panettiere between May 2019 and January 2020. Although he was sentenced to 45 days in jail, TMZ reported that he served 33 days. His sentence also included probation, domestic violence classes, and a five-year restraining order.

Months before Panettiere’s death, Hickerson had publicly suggested that he still imagined a future with her. In a May interview, he said he continued to think about marrying Panettiere and had not given up hope that they could eventually reunite.

Panettiere reportedly laughed off the idea of marrying him when she was approached at LAX that same month. Yet reports indicate the pair later reconnected before her death.

Old Alleged Texts Reveal Another Troubling Chapter

As scrutiny of their history has intensified, alleged messages Hickerson sent Panettiere following his 2020 arrest have also resurfaced. According to TMZ, court documents from Hickerson’s criminal case contained alleged threatening communications sent after his Wyoming domestic battery arrest.

A probable cause affidavit reportedly stated that Panettiere’s lawyer contacted Wyoming authorities because Hickerson had allegedly communicated with the actress despite a court order prohibiting contact.

Her lawyer reportedly provided authorities with emails containing screenshots of text messages, missed calls, and short video clips. One alleged text from Hickerson read, “Time to go to war I guess.” Another allegedly stated, “After Wyoming and LA disappears [sic] so do the videos.”

One of the longer alleged messages read, “Even if i sit in a jail cell for ten years. All of the stuff that is vaulted overseas with my people will come out the second I step foot into prison. And all that does is hurt your name while simultaneously clearing my name. And at that point who actually cares [sic]?”

Other alleged messages reportedly included, “Say something Hayd, so I don’t get defensive and start firing off emails to people to get ready.” Another stated, “I thought his legal stuff would magically disappear… we gotta figure something out, buddy.”

Investigators believed the messages showed an effort to intimidate Panettiere into dropping the case. One alleged text said, “It is very simple, it is a very simple fix, between me and you, you gotta make one phone call [sic].”

Another reportedly read, “I don’t want to go to court, for you. I will be [expletive] fine in court, trust me, it’s for you.” Hickerson was initially facing roughly a year behind bars in connection with the Wyoming incident, but the judge suspended the jail sentence and ordered him to serve a year of probation.

Questions Remain About Panettiere’s Final Hours

Panettiere was found unresponsive at a South Carolina Airbnb on Sunday, August 16. Authorities responded to a report involving an unresponsive woman in cardiac arrest following a suspected overdose, according to reporting surrounding the investigation.

Life-saving measures were attempted but were unsuccessful, and Panettiere was pronounced dead at approximately 2:30 p.m. An autopsy found no signs of trauma that would have contributed to her death, and toxicology results are still being awaited to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Hickerson was photographed in South Carolina three days later alongside his brother Zach, who reportedly discovered Panettiere while Hickerson was elsewhere inside the Airbnb. Police have said their initial investigation found no indication of foul play, and no one has accused Hickerson of causing Panettiere’s death.

For now, his attorney says he will not be discussing the case further while investigators continue their work.

But between Panettiere’s reported decision to hire security, the intervention her team allegedly considered, Hickerson’s legal setback days before her death, and that since-deleted comment about what he was “allegedly capable of,” the circumstances surrounding the final months of her life are receiving renewed scrutiny.

Hayden Panettiere is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko.
