A Seven-Year-Old Who Preferred Commercials to School

She immediately told him to take his hands off her and left. Although she protected herself in the moment, theĀ betrayalĀ shook her trust and left her questioning Hollywood and the life she had been living inside it.
Her Body Finally Refused to Keep Going
In 1982, McNichol traveled to Europe to make “Just the Way You Are,” her eighth film in six years. She had alreadyĀ warnedĀ her manager that she did not believe she should go, but the production continued.

McNichol made it through scenes while her condition deteriorated between takes. She barely ate or slept, cried constantly, experiencedĀ severe anxiety, and said her weight fell to approximatelyĀ 96 pounds.
During a Christmas break, she returned to California and showed a friend how unwell she had become. That friend took her to aĀ psychiatrist, who recognized the depth of the anger and pain she had been carrying.

The doctor advised her that she could not safely return to work. For the first time in her professional life, McNichol refused to go back, although she eventually completed the film about a year later.

But her mental health was still an issue. She was subsequently diagnosed withĀ bipolar disorderĀ in 1992, according toĀ The Hollywood Reporter. Her final credited acting work came during the following decade, and in 2001, afterĀ 24 yearsĀ in Hollywood, she formally announced her retirement.

Two years later, McNichol appeared at a “Love Boat” reunion in Fort Lauderdale, where cast members christened a new Regal Princess ship and celebratedĀ 50 yearsĀ of Princess Cruises. She explained that leaving entertainment had allowed her to explore an existence beyond the stage.
“I was on the big stage between ages 8 and 30,” sheĀ told People. “I left show business for a variety of reasons, but a big one was my interest in learning what else there is in life.”
