Looking back on their friendship, the actress affectionately called Tracy her “other husband,” a nickname that reflected the closeness they shared for years.

Their friendship continued after “Little House on the Prairie” ended.

In her memoir, the actress wrote that Tracy was diagnosed with AIDS in the mid-1980s. She admired his willingness to undergo experimental treatments, hoping the research would help others even if they did not save him.

She also recalled a phone call in November 1986, when Tracy told her he had little time left and planned to return to Florida to be with his family. Trying to comfort her, he said, “Don’t worry, this isn’t the end; it’s just a change in the relationship.”

Less than a week later, on Thanksgiving Day in 1986, Tracy died. According to IMDb, the loss inspired her decades-long commitment to AIDS activism. The actress is Alison Arngrim, whose portrayal of Nellie made her a television icon.

Away from the screen, Arngrim also found lasting happiness in her personal life.

Accoridng to the Daily Mail, she was first married to David Spencer from 1989 to 1993 before marrying Robert Paul “Bob” Schoonover.

Recalling their wedding in her memoir, she wrote, “Not the blushing bride type, I wore a tux to match my husband, Bob, when we wed on November 6, 1993.” The couple live in Los Angeles, where Arngrim continues her advocacy work.

She Returned to ‘Little House’ — But Not as Nellie

More than 50 years after first bringing Nellie to life, Arngrim returned to the franchise that made her famous.

Her appearance comes in Netflix’s 2026 reimagining of Wilder’s beloved “Little House” books, inspired by the author’s childhood on the American frontier. Blending family drama with a frontier survival story, the series stars Alice Halsey as Laura and has already been renewed for a second season.

Season 2 will take the Ingalls family to Walnut Grove, Minnesota, where viewers will meet one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters: Laura’s longtime rival, Nellie, played by Willa Dunn.

The new season will also introduce Charlotte Sullivan as Nellie’s quick-witted mother, Margaret Oleson, and Rachelle Lefevre as beloved schoolteacher Eva Beadle, who becomes an important mentor to Laura and her sister, Mary.

Arngrim welcomed the announcement of a new actress stepping into the iconic role. Reflecting on Dunn’s casting, she told Netflix’s Tudum, “Oh my God — I’ve been waiting for the new Nellie for years. I absolutely went bonkers.”

She encouraged Dunn to embrace the opportunity and enjoy playing one of television’s most memorable villains. “Take it and run with it. Enjoy yourself. As far as I know, it’s the most fun part to play ever,” Arngrim said. She also advised the actress to build friendships with her castmates, including those playing her on-screen rivals.

At the same time, Arngrim acknowledged that portraying Nellie comes with unique challenges. “You need a strong sense of self and a dark sense of humor,” she said, explaining that some viewers have difficulty separating the actress from the character.

Before Nellie returns in Season 2, however, Arngrim makes a surprise appearance in the first season as Ida, a mysterious forest drifter who briefly crosses paths with the Ingalls family. The role came together with little notice.

Recalling how she joined the production, Arngrim said, “I got a phone call: ‘What are you doing in a week and a half? Could you come to Winnipeg? There’s this character, we want it to be you.’ It was very fast — maybe two weeks’ notice.”

Although the turnaround was quick, Arngrim welcomed the opportunity to revisit the show in an entirely different role. Describing Ida, she said, “Ida is basically a crazy lady in the woods. Sort of a forest drifter with drifter friends.”

She added, “They’re hanging out in the woods, having their little dinner, a little campfire in the forest, and the two poor unsuspecting Ingalls girls wander in, and we’re like, ‘Hi, come hang out with us.’ I thought, ‘Oh, that’s creepy as all get-out. That sounds right up my alley. I’ll be right over!'”

Fans Couldn’t Believe the Transformation

On Facebook, one viewer wrote, “Oh Nelly, them teeth 🙃.” Another commented, “Omg I knew it was you. A little creepy, but so was Nelly Olsen.”

Another fan praised the production team’s work, “They did a really good job making you scary, even took your beautiful blue eyes away to do that.”

Several viewers became especially curious about Ida’s worn, stained teeth. One person joked, “See a dentist! Quickly! 😁 What do they put on your teeth??”

Another playfully referenced the original series, writing, “How’d you get your teeth to look like that? I always knew that if you & Willie didn’t stay out of the candy jars, you’d both wind up with rotten teeth! 😂😂😂.”

Arngrim reassured fans that the transformation was entirely temporary.

In a recent post online, she shared side-by-side photos comparing her everyday appearance with her appearance as Ida. She explained that the stained teeth were created entirely with makeup and jokingly reminded fans that she really does brush her teeth.

Arngrim also shared her enthusiasm for the project on Instagram. She wrote, “Bwahaha! I had SOOOOO much fun doing this! So happy people are enjoying my cameo on the new Little House!”

Creating Ida’s Rugged Appearance

Arngrim said the production’s commitment to historical accuracy impressed her from the moment she tried on the costume.

Hayden Panettiere, who began acting as a child before going on to star in “Heroes” and “Nashville,” has died at 36. Her representative confirmed her death to various outlets, though further details surrounding the circumstances were not immediately available

Her father, Skip Panettiere, announced the loss in a statement in which he remembered his daughter for the impact she had on those closest to her and the audiences who knew her through her work. He shared:

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

The late actress’s father also asked for privacy “as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.” Hayden is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya Klitschko, whom she welcomed with her former fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko.

Their journey as parents began with joy in December 2014, although Hayden would reveal years later that the months surrounding her daughter’s arrival had been far more frightening than anyone outside the family knew.

During her pregnancy, an OB-GYN became concerned that her baby’s arms and legs were not developing as quickly as the rest of her body. A radiologist later determined that Kaya’s limbs were fine, but another concern emerged when doctors focused on the size of her head.

Hayden wrote in her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” that she was told her daughter had microcephaly and could potentially have a cognitive impairment.

While waiting for answers, she leaned on Wladimir, who told her about a Ukrainian tradition for good luck that involved kneeling before a tree, holding it with both hands, and praying. Weeks later, he was beside her when Kaya was born in Hawaii on December 9, 2014. The couple publicly celebrated, stating:

“We are over the moon and madly in love!”

Behind that announcement, however, Hayden was recovering from a delivery that had turned into an emergency. Doctors called a code crimson during her C-section when her blood would not clot, leading to a three-hour operation, and she later learned that her uterus had become infected.

What followed was another struggle the actress had not expected. Instead of experiencing motherhood as she had imagined it, she found herself emotionally numb and unable to understand why bonding with her newborn seemed like an “insurmountable task.”

Her “natural optimism and pep” disappeared, she wrote, and she began feeling as though she was “raising Kaya alone.” Alcohol gradually became part of how she coped.

The actress remembered pouring herself a glass of wine so full that it “almost overflowed,” and her drinking worsened after she returned to work on “Nashville.”

Eventually, the “Nashville” star became relieved when Wladimir was not around to see the empty bottles she discarded, and she reached a point where she needed alcohol to get out of bed and go to work.

When Kaya was four months old, Hayden entered treatment and was diagnosed with postpartum depression. Medication helped keep her from “cracking,” she said, but brought another difficulty. She added:

“If I didn’t take them, I couldn’t sleep. If I did, I slept too much.”

On one occasion, she awoke in a hospital after someone from work found her asleep and could not wake her. It was not long before the late actress returned to drinking, initially convincing herself that no one could smell it on her breath.

As her addiction continued, the consequences reached her career and home life; she lost her Neutrogena contract, and her relationship with Wladimir deteriorated.

Their disagreement over what she was experiencing became clear in one exchange she later recalled. After Hayden told Wladimir she still did not feel like herself despite treatment, he said happiness was a choice. “You think my depression is a choice?” she remembered responding.

As their relationship broke down, Kaya began moving between her parents until Wladimir eventually sought full custody because he was concerned about their daughter being in Hayden’s care while she was still recovering. Hayden initially defended herself but ultimately chose not to fight him for custody.

From 2018 onward, Kaya lived primarily with her father in Europe, a change that reshaped Hayden’s experience of motherhood and that she would continue to grieve.

They maintained their relationship through visits and travel, but much of the ordinary closeness between a parent and child had to cross a screen. She wrote in her memoir:

“Not being under the same roof with her every day has been the most gut-wrenching experience of my life, and it’s hard to describe the layers of emotion — including sadness, resentment, and anger — I’ve felt because of it.”

The actress was equally candid about what she believed she had lost. “I grieve that I’m not the mother I thought I’d be and definitely not the mother I want to be,” she admitted.

Yet those feelings existed alongside the love and pride she repeatedly expressed for Kaya. “Trust me, no one should ever have to raise a child on FaceTime,” Hayden shared.

But even as she acknowledged how much the separation hurt, she called Kaya “the greatest gift of my life” and said she felt blessed to be her mother. The distance, the “Nashville” star believed, did not erase their connection.

She described their bond as “strong,” and as Kaya grew older, her mother’s public comments increasingly focused not on how far apart they lived but on the person her daughter was becoming.

Speaking to People in 2024, Hayden could barely separate her pride from her amazement at how much of herself she recognized in the then-nine-year-old. “She is amazing. I mean, she is so much like me. It’s crazy,” she said.

Kaya already spoke English, Russian, Ukrainian, and German and was learning French, prompting Hayden to call her “a genius” while joking, “She doesn’t appreciate it now.” There were other similarities, too.

Kaya loved horses, a passion that ran in Hayden’s family, as well as swimming, which carried another connection for her mother: Hayden had spent much of her pregnancy swimming while filming “Nashville.”

Those small details became part of the motherhood Hayden did have, even when it looked different from the one she once expected. She did not hide the addiction and depression that altered her family, nor did she disguise how deeply she mourned living apart from Kaya.

Lesley later rejected her daughter’s account and explained why she had chosen to cut off contact, turning a private family fracture into an unusually raw public dispute.

The Approval She Spent Years Chasing

Hayden was only a baby when Lesley, a former soap actress, began guiding her into modeling. Commercials and acting roles followed, placing Lesley at the center of nearly every professional decision her daughter made.

Hayden said she appreciated the work her mother put into creating that career. Yet as the actress explained during a May 2026 appearance on Jay Shetty’s podcast, gratitude became tangled with fear and an intense need to keep Lesley satisfied.

After filming a take, Hayden did not immediately look toward the director or producers. She watched her mother. “I’ve desperately [sought] her approval for my entire life,” Hayden said. “The only person that existed and the only person whose opinion mattered to me was hers.”

If Hayden believed a performance had fallen short, she worried about more than losing a job. She feared Lesley’s reaction.

“I had to make sure that she was happy with it and I wasn’t in trouble, because if I didn’t do it right, I was in trouble,” Hayden recalled.

Stories from Hayden’s memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” released on May 19, 2026, showed how that pressure allegedly entered the smallest details of her childhood.

In excerpts covered by Variety, Hayden called Lesley a perfectionist who became angry when she failed to secure a role. One especially startling allegation involved a lost tooth.

Hayden claimed Lesley superglued the tooth back into her mouth so its absence would not interfere with her chances of getting a job. This is also because Lesley had strong ideas about Hayden’s appearance.

Although she sometimes used her daughter’s tomboy qualities to help her compete for roles such as the one in “Remember the Titans,” Hayden said Lesley usually pushed her toward more traditionally feminine outfits.

Those decisions could extend beyond clothes. Hayden had already completed camera tests, costume fittings, and hair and makeup preparations for “Panic Room” when Nicole Kidman left the production due to an injury.

Jodie Foster replaced Nicole, and Hayden was subsequently recast. Lesley allegedly told her that producers wanted a different actress to play the daughter because Hayden and Jodie did not resemble each other closely enough.

Years later, Hayden said a former manager gave her another explanation. Director David Fincher had reportedly asked for Hayden’s hair to be cut so she would look more like Jodie, who was known for wearing a bob.

The same conflict followed Hayden into adolescence. She valued the opportunities Lesley had created, but she wanted their relationship to exist without auditions, contracts, and money holding it together. At 19, Hayden finally tried to make that separation.

Three Words Changed Their Relationship

Hayden was filming “Heroes” when Lesley entered her trailer during a lunch break. After years of depending on her mother as both a parent and manager, Hayden said she finally found the courage to end their professional arrangement.

“I don’t want us to work together anymore; I just want you to be my mom,” Hayden remembered telling her.

Lesley’s alleged reply consisted of three words: “You owe me.”

Hayden had not expected that response. Lesley walked out immediately afterward, leaving her daughter briefly relieved that the confrontation had ended quickly.

The relief did not last. Hayden said the remark became a “dark looming cloud” as she tried to understand what kind of repayment her mother expected. “What does she mean by I owe her?” Hayden remembered wondering. “What form of payment is she expecting?”

When Jay asked about their relationship at that time, Hayden said they were sadly estranged. She added that she and Skip continued to have a great relationship.

Hayden’s version placed the original fracture inside that trailer on the set of “Heroes.” Lesley’s account started much later and replaced the question of money with allegations of trauma, addiction, and behavior she could no longer accept.

Lesley Explained Why She Walked Away

Lesley said the estrangement was a recent development rather than the outcome of Hayden ending their business partnership at 19. She dated the break to around mid-September 2025.

“We each are entitled to choose our path in life,” Lesley told the Daily Mail. “After 20 years of trauma, chaos, addictions [and] accusations, I felt I had no other option but to choose no contact.”

Lesley nevertheless expressed hope for her daughter. “There will forever be a lingering hope that she will find her own path to inner peace.”

Her initial explanation sounded restrained compared with the statement she issued only days later. As Hayden continued promoting her memoir, Lesley responded with a far more direct assessment of her daughter and the public allegations against her.

The Memoir Brought Their Rift Into Public View

Lesley accused Hayden of using their family conflict to generate attention for “This Is Me: A Reckoning.” “I believe the present drama is partially to sell books,” Lesley told Page Six.

She then described what she called a personality “style” involving control, entitlement, and a lack of empathy. Lesley did not name a specific medical diagnosis, but she claimed people who behaved that way feared having their public image exposed.

“There is a personality ‘style’ which manifests as a need for control, entitlement and a lack of empathy,” Lesley said. “The major fear is that someone will see through the mask they present to the world and discover who they truthfully are.”

Lesley argued that the condition could not be fixed through continued support or comfort. No amount of encouragement, she claimed, would ever be enough.
