A report from Air Mail described a later addition to what was called the task force’s “ugly” category. In April, TMZ reportedly received another series of emails. The messages were described as hyperbolic and often conflicting, with the sender first claiming to have seen Nancy in Sonora, Mexico.

Then the sender allegedly shifted the story and declared that she was dead. The person claimed that, for half a Bitcoin — approximately $34,000 — they would reveal both the location of the corpse and the identity of the kidnapper.

At first, the task force reportedly grew excited. The format of those emails was said to be persuasively similar to the initial notes, giving investigators hope that they might finally have a card to play.

But that hope did not last. In time, investigators concluded that the supposed “snitch” was only a malicious con artist. The same report suggested that the “good” emails painted a picture of a kidnapper who was educated, articulate, and knowledgeable about cryptocurrency.

It also noted that the “apology” in the message that allegedly revealed Nancy’s death suggested the abductor might not have been the coldhearted cartel member law enforcement had initially speculated about.

Instead, the working theory described through the language in the ransom notes was that the abductor was likely an opportunist. The person may have been a ruthless, educated local who saw a chance at an unscrupulous windfall and took it.

At the ‘Today’ Desk, the Story Became Painfully Personal

Then, as the theory went, the scheme may have fallen apart when Nancy died, whether because of violence or illness. That awful uncertainty hung over a June 23, 2026, episode of “Today,” where new details about the investigation were discussed on air.

The segment reiterated that the second of two notes sent to media outlets from an alleged kidnapper indicated that Nancy had died.

It also reported that the note made no further request for money, which contradicts other reports that the note in fact included information about how Nancy’s body could be delivered for money, though it was apparently unclear whether the amount was still the original amount or some other sum.

Nevertheless, the broadcast revisited Savannah and her siblings’ earlier video message to whoever had taken their mother. The segment also noted that the first note reportedly demanded $6 million in Bitcoin in exchange for her release.

NBC News had previously reported on both notes, but the contents of the second note had not been made public until recently. Like investigators, Savannah believes the notes are potentially credible, as she expressed during a previous interview with Hoda Kotb.

“I believe the two notes that we received, that we responded to, I tend to believe those are real,” Savannah had divulged.

Still, the identity of the person behind the notes remains unknown. So does the identity of the masked armed man who was captured on Nancy’s doorbell camera in the early morning hours when she was taken.

Investigators are still searching for that man. They are also trying to find a match with some of the DNA uncovered at Nancy’s home. Then came the part that made the studio feel noticeably heavier…

At 9:50 p.m., her garage door closed. That detail, small and precise, became one of the last markers of Nancy’s known life before the mystery began. The garage door closed; Nancy was believed to be home; the night should have ended there. But sometime after that, the trail began to twist…

The House Began Telling Its Own Story

In the early hours of February 1, the first strange signs appeared. Nancy’s doorbell camera disconnected at 1:47 a.m. Around 25 minutes later, software detected someone — or possibly an animal — on a camera. Then, at 2:28 a.m., Nancy’s pacemaker app disconnected from her phone.

The Backpack Trail

On February 12, the FBI released the first physical description of the suspect. He was described as a male of average build, approximately 5-foot-9 or 5-foot-10. The black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack seen in the doorbell footage became an important clue. The FBI doubled its reward to $100,000 for information leading to Nancy’s location or to an arrest and conviction.

Around that time, investigators were also examining black gloves found during the search. The gloves appeared to resemble those worn by the figure in the video.

According to a KING 5 report, two people died at the scene, while five others were initially reported injured. Four victims were transported to Harborview Medical Center, and another person with minor injuries was treated at the scene.

A separate victim later arrived at UW Medical Center with a gunshot wound. One of the people taken to Harborview subsequently died, Seattle Police Deputy Chief Andre Sayles confirmed during a press conference.

The developing reports therefore indicated that three victims had died, while several others were receiving treatment following the shooting. Harborview was placed under a modified lockdown to protect the victims. Authorities also urged the public to avoid Seattle Center as officers began processing the sprawling crime scene.

A Celebration Turns Into a Stampede

The gunfire erupted while thousands of visitors were packed into the Seattle Center grounds. Bite of Seattle can attract as many as 350,000 people over its three-day run, with an estimated 100,000 visitors attending each day.

“Inside the Seattle Armory was crazy, within seconds maybe 60-plus people had flooded the doors inside, all running towards that back corner with Seattle Fudge [sic],” Sengupta said.

Faith Adia Hunter had just bought food from a crepe vendor with her friends when the shots began. She then made a frightening realization: one of the shooters was reportedly close to where they had been standing.

“We were right next to him when it started [sic] so we took off running,” Hunter told Fox 34. “So we took off running too into the building with the crowd.” Hunter and others eventually found shelter inside the nearby Seattle Children’s Museum.

As panic swept across the festival grounds, vendors reportedly fled toward the exits and left behind food, tents, cooking supplies, and equipment. Hours later, some remained outside the police perimeter, uncertain when they would be allowed to return and collect their belongings.

Vendor Roberto Ramirez said he initially heard noises that resembled firecrackers. Then people began yelling “shooter” and running in fear. “Suddenly everything was empty,” Ramirez said. “People were freaked out.”

The confusion did not end when the first crowds escaped. Ramirez said new guests continued arriving without realizing what had happened, only to be turned away by police.

‘People Were Falling on the Ground’

Estan Wakonabo was waiting in line for a photo booth with his girlfriend when someone shoved him from behind. When he turned around, he saw a wave of people rushing away. “People were hiding, were pushing, people were falling on the ground, baby strollers were falling,” he said.

Wakonabo then heard the unmistakable sound that confirmed everyone’s worst fear. “Once I heard a ‘pop, pop, pop,’ that’s when I knew it was a shooter,” he recalled. After escorting his girlfriend to safety, Wakonabo returned to photograph the scene. He said he saw several victims lying on the ground.

“It was a stampede,” he told NBC affiliate KING in an account reported by NBC News. “There’s bodies everywhere,” he added of the people who appeared to have been injured. “I mean, I counted eight.”

‘We All Got Down and Took Cover’

Paul Skinner, who was helping operate a booth for the Crave food truck, also said the first sounds resembled firecrackers. “We just heard what at first sounded like firecrackers, but it’s just a little too crowded for that kind of thing,” Skinner recalled.

“So then, when the crowd started moving quickly in herds, you knew it was something was happening [sic].” He added, “We all got down and took cover.”

Isaiah Flores Sanches remembered how abruptly the cheerful gathering became a nightmare. “It went from something being so playful and so joyful to being something so horrific, and I seen [sic] people on the floor trying to take cover,” he said.

Festival Representative Davis stressed that such violence is not typical of the popular event. “The Bite of Seattle is a very positive event,” Davis said. “We haven’t had any issue in recent years.” Festival organizers did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment.

A Landmark Complex Becomes a Crime Scene

Seattle Center is home to some of the city’s most recognizable attractions. Its central structures were developed for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, including the Space Needle, the Seattle Center Monorail, and the building formerly known as the Coliseum.

Following the shooting, the Seattle Monorail was shut down for the remainder of Sunday. Officials said it was expected to reopen at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, July 27. The Pacific Science Center also announced that it would remain closed Monday. Guests who had already bought tickets were expected to receive refunds.

Federal and State Agencies Join the Investigation

Multiple local, state, and federal agencies responded after the shooting. The investigation involves the Seattle Police Department’s Homicide Unit, Gun Violence Reduction Unit, and Crime Scene Investigation Unit. The FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, King County law enforcement, and Washington State Patrol also responded.

The state SWAT team was sent at the Seattle Police Department’s request, according to Gov. Bob Ferguson’s office. Despite the scale of the response, investigators faced a significant obstacle. Sayles said there were no security cameras in the immediate area where the shooting occurred. Police asked anyone with information to contact the SPD tip line at 206-233-5000.

Authorities say the violence began on Harrison Street, where Shamar allegedly shot his wife in the face, and she has undergone surgery, according to KSLA. “We had a couple names and Charlie just fit. As far as the Axel, that’s Elin’s brother’s name so we wanted to make sure it stayed in the family.”

Unlike Sam, Charlie took to golf early and hard, and Tiger has made no secret of how much joy that brings him. By the time his son was old enough to swing a club properly, Tiger was already marveling at what he saw.

In a 2020 interview with Golf Digest, the legendary golfer opened up about their time on the course together after the announcement that the two would compete as a team in the PNC Championship, a 36-hole scramble exhibition featuring major-winning athletes alongside a family member.

“He’s starting to get into it. He’s starting to understand how to play. He’s asking me the right questions,” Tiger said. “It reminds me so much of me and my dad growing up.”

He even admitted feeling a bit jealous when watching Charlie swing a golf club. He mentioned that he frequently studies his son’s technique and finds himself wishing he could still move his body with that same level of flexibility and rotation.

The two went on to compete together in the PNC Championship multiple times, and Tiger has made clear, repeatedly, that no physical setback is enough to keep him away from those moments.

In 2022, still recovering from a serious car accident and battling plantar fasciitis in his right foot, both Tiger and a 13-year-old Charlie were noticeably limping during the pro-am at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando.

The teenager had sprained his ankle, but was ready to go for the first round. Tiger, who was permitted to use a cart for the 36-hole scramble, didn’t hesitate when asked whether playing was worth delaying his recovery.

“I don’t really care about that. I think being there with and alongside my son is far more important, and [getting] to have a chance to have this experience with him is far better than my foot being a little creaky,” he said.

That car accident, which happened in February 2021 outside Los Angeles, was a turning point that brought fatherhood into even sharper focus.

According to a source close to Tiger, he “lives for” his kids, and their presence gave him something to fight for throughout the grueling process of getting better.

“Being a dad has helped him stay focused on his recovery,” the source said.

Fans watching Charlie grow up alongside his dad have been vocal about how striking the resemblance has become.

On Facebook, one person remarked, “He turned into his Dad!” while another countered, “He looks like his Mom. so v [sic].”

Someone else was more decisive, commenting, “He definitely looks like his dad. The chin and cheeks.” And another added, “Oh my gosh – he’s so big now!”

Big indeed, and the photos of them all capture just how much both Sam and Charlie have grown, and how naturally Tiger steps into the role he seems to treasure most.
