But as heartbreaking as the discovery was, court documents now suggest that trouble may have been lurking in their family life for a long time, particularly relating to Addilyn’s father and his attitude toward their daughter.

A Custody Battle Years In The Making

According to the Clark County Coroner’s Office, Tawnia’s death has officially been ruled a suicide. But authorities were still awaiting official rulings on Addilyn’s cause and manner of death as of February 17, 2026.

Although the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department continues to investigate, legal documents have revealed a deeper consideration in their case.

These newly reviewed court records outline a custody fight between Tawnia and Addilyn’s father, Bradley Smith, that stretched back more than a decade.

The pair’s divorce proceedings began in 2015, and a decree was finalized in 2017 in Utah’s 4th District Court. What followed were years of filings, motions, and heated disputes over parent-time and custody arrangements.

In May 2024, a judge updated the divorce decree to grant both parents equal responsibility and time with their child. The new arrangement established joint legal and physical custody, requiring the child to switch homes every other week.

On paper, the order appeared structured and clear.

Exchanges took place at the child’s school during the academic year, shifting to the Herriman Police Department during breaks.

Furthermore, to keep the process orderly, the court required the parents to park at least five spaces away from each other. The order also strictly forbade both parties from filming their daughter during these times.

There was even a provision allowing one parent to keep Addilyn overnight if the other failed to pick her up from school during scheduled parent-time. This level of detail hinted at a relationship strained far beyond the ordinary.

And that was only the latest chapter.

Earlier Rulings Raised Serious Concerns

Digging further into the records reveals an even more contentious period.

In December 2020, after a temporary order hearing, the court granted Bradley sole physical custody on a temporary basis. The judge determined that changing custody was in Addilyn’s best interest at the time.

The court expressed significant worry regarding Tawnia’s actions, noting that her conduct mirrored patterns of parental alienation.

Furthermore, the judge found that she had committed domestic violence while the child was nearby. Ultimately, the ruling cast serious doubt on her capacity to cooperate effectively as a parent.

The court even mandated that a third party oversee her visitation sessions, requiring her to cover all associated costs.

In May 2020, several months prior, the court commanded Tawnia to attend a hearing to justify why the judge should not hold her in contempt.

This legal notice stemmed from allegations that she had refused to provide scheduled visitation and failed to cover insurance premiums. The court explicitly cautioned her that these violations could result in penalties, such as a 30-day jail sentence.

To sum up, the legal documents show a long history of requests to change custody and a move from Salt Lake County to Utah County in early 2015. All of these filings paint a clear picture of a years-long fight over Addilyn.

Yet the courtroom battles were only part of what was unfolding.

Alarming Allegations Surface Online

In the days following the tragedy, a Facebook page called Vacationland Mama shared troubling screenshots that allegedly came from Tawnia’s now-private Instagram account.

The posts appear to show text messages sent by Bradley.

One message, uploaded on February 22, 2018, read, “I’ve told you easily 4 [expletive] times now that she’s going to daycare you stupid [expletive] [expletive].” Another stated, “You are one jealous fat ugly stupid [expletive] of a [expletive].”

According to Tawnia, she had simply asked whether their daughter was already at daycare and suggested that her own mother could watch Addilyn if not. The response was seemingly that explosive.

But the texts were not the only claims shared online.

In another lengthy post, Tawnia allegedly wrote, “I need advice I have no idea what to do since I am terrified of Brad.”

She went on to describe several supposed incidents involving Addilyn during visits with her father and his girlfriend. According to the post, Addilyn had begun seeing a therapist and had disclosed troubling experiences.

“The things Addi has been telling me in the last two weeks is awful,” Tawnia wrote, explaining that her daughter said she was restricted from eating pizza at a birthday party and was only allowed chocolate.

She also claimed that Addilyn had not been properly bathed and had developed rashes. Even more disturbing were allegations that her daughter had been told not to tell her about things that happened at her father’s house.

Tawnia wrote that the therapist had advised her to contact Child Protective Services. Still, she admitted to being afraid of retaliation. “I just can’t make up my mind on calling CPS,” she wrote.

Erika Kirk Faces Her Husband’s Accused Killer For The First Time

Erika, 37, arrived at the Provo courthouse on Monday, July 6, 2026, dressed in black and escorted by two men as the five-day preliminary hearing got underway. She took a seat beside Charlie’s parents, Robert and Kathryn Kirk, wiping away tears with a handkerchief as she came face to face with Tyler for the first time since her husband’s death.

Kathryn clutched a tissue pack throughout the session, according to a Fox 13 report from inside the courtroom, while Robert wore a gray striped suit as the two walked in arm in arm.

Donald Trump Jr., his wife Bettina Anderson, and conservative commentator Jack Posobiec were also present, according to the initial report on Erika’s arrival. Tyler, 23, sat nearby in a gray suit with his wrists shackled, occasionally smiling as he conferred with his attorneys and jotting notes while witnesses testified.

Security inside the courthouse was tight, with roughly half a dozen officers in tactical gear stationed indoors and additional personnel positioned on the rooftop.

Judge Tony Graf, who is presiding over the hearing, will ultimately decide whether prosecutors have enough evidence to send Tyler to trial for the September 10, 2025, shooting of Charlie at Utah Valley University. He faces the death penalty if convicted and has not yet entered a plea.

The confessions didn’t stop there. In text messages shown in court Thursday, Tyler allegedly wrote to Lance, “shouldn’t be long until I can come home, but I gotta grab my rifle still. to be honest I had hoped to keep this secret till I died of old age. I am sorry to involve you [sic].“

When Lance asked outright, “you werent the one who did it right????” Tyler allegedly answered plainly, “I am, I’m sorry,” before adding, “I had enough of his hatred. some hate can’t be negotiated out [sic].”

The final confession came face to face on September 11, 2025, the day after the shooting. Lance recalled Tyler breaking down in tears when confronted directly about what he’d done.

“Didn’t go into detail. I just asked him in person if what he said was true the night before, and he said it was. Started crying a little bit, and said he wishes he hadn’t done it,” Lance told investigators. He added that Tyler eventually said he “would talk to his parents or turn himself over.”

Prosecutor Ryan McBride pressed Lance further during questioning, asking directly, “Did he talk about what he had done?” Lance’s response confirmed Tyler never elaborated beyond that brief, tearful admission and the texts.

The Rifle, The Bush, And A Grandfather’s Gun

Between those confessions, Tyler’s texts allegedly revealed that he spent hours consumed with worry over the murder weapon itself, a bolt-action rifle he said belonged to his grandfather.

He admitted to Lance that the gun’s four-digit serial number worried him, writing that despite its age, “judging from today, I’d say grandpas gun does just fine [sic].” Erika was reportedly seen breaking down as these messages were read in court.

Tyler also confessed the shooting had not been spontaneous, telling Lance he had been planning the attack for “a bit over a week” beforehand. He allegedly told Lance he had ditched the rifle in a bush while changing outfits after the shooting, then doubled back to the area and sat in his car for nearly an hour trying to figure out how to retrieve it.

“Gonna see of the road closer to campus is open, so I can drive past and check stuff out. Probably still closed off tho,” he wrote, before adding with apparent anxiety, “Getting worried, hard to know for sure but I’m not finding my rifle, could be in the wrong spot [sic].”

Lance wrote back asking, “Do you think they found it.”

Separately, prosecutors presented a Discord message in which Tyler allegedly confessed to friends outside his relationship with Lance, writing “it was me” and pointing them toward “the photos from the surveillance footage” as proof.

Forensic testimony delivered Tuesday, July 7, revealed that DNA likely matching Tyler was recovered from a towel allegedly used to conceal the rifle, while DNA matching both Tyler and Lance turned up on a screwdriver left at the rooftop position where prosecutors say the fatal shot was fired.

Sergeant Jennifer Faumuina testified that the shot that killed Charlie traveled roughly 415 feet from that rooftop perch. But Lance also recalled a strange request from Tyler weeks before the shooting, when he asked whether the two owned a Dremel engraving tool.

“I don’t remember exactly when, but he had said he was planning to go hunting with his family and he asked me if we had like a Dremel, because he said he wanted to engrave messages on bullets,” Lance testified.

Investigator Brian Davis of the Utah State Bureau of Investigation told the court that this account matched an earlier police interview Lance gave back on September 12, 2025. Therefore, he was granted limited immunity by the US Attorney’s Office and the Utah County Attorney’s Office in exchange for his cooperation and was not accused of any wrongdoing himself.

What Prosecutors Say It All Proves

Prosecutors, who are seeking the death penalty against Tyler, argue the confessions and messages establish that the killing was politically motivated, pointing to Charlie’s conservative views and public stances, including comments critical of the LGBTQ community.

Tyler’s defense has pushed back hard against that framing, fighting to limit how much of the political angle can be used against their client, particularly given its weight in a potential death penalty argument.

Lance told the court that Tyler rarely discussed LGBTQ issues at all and instead gravitated toward conversations about Donald Trump and his policies. “I personally had never heard him talk about Charlie Kirk before specifically,” Lance said.

The esteem in which other comedians held him was hardly a secret either. According to the Television Academy, Don Knotts called John the “greatest physical comedian on the planet” in 2002.

That recollection became especially moving years later when Jason and Tyler, who both followed their dad into the entertainment industry as actors, discussed their father’s work in a recent Pause Rewind interview.

Asked which of their father’s roles stood out most, Jason admitted he had plenty to choose from. “Oh my gosh. I have a bunch. I really have a bunch,” he said. Still, Jason ultimately singled out “Sling Blade” and “Skin Deep,” saying, “Those two performances are two of my favourites.”

Tyler also had a special attachment to “Skin Deep,” partly because he had to wait until he was old enough to watch it. Once he finally did, he said it became one of his all-time favorite movies, with several of his father’s scenes standing out as “amazing and brilliant.” But Jason said watching his father as Jack Tripper, and later on “8 Simple Rules,” offered something different.

He recalled visiting the “8 Simple Rules” set when he was younger and seeing just how naturally John fit into the sitcom environment. Jason remembered his father being “so on fire” and said he genuinely loved making people laugh even when the cameras were not rolling.

He also pointed fans toward “8 Simple Rules” bloopers, calling them one of his “internet happy places” because they offer a glimpse of what John was like between takes. More than two decades later, on September 17, 2026, what would have been John’s 78th birthday, his family once again spoke publicly about the condition that killed him. According to the New York Post, John’s loved ones are working to increase awareness of aortic dissection, a medical emergency involving the body’s largest artery.

When John arrived at the hospital in September 2003 sweating heavily, vomiting, and experiencing chest pain, doctors initially believed he was having a heart attack. His widow, Amy, said the assumption reflected how much more commonly physicians encounter cardiac symptoms that appear to point toward a heart attack.

The new photo captures a brief moment from Lionel Richie’s return to public view. But once it surfaced online, his appearance quickly became the focus of sharply different reactions.

After the concert, Richie sought further medical care. TMZ reported that he checked himself into a St. Louis hospital, where doctors were looking into possible “slight dehydration.”

It was similar to the diagnosis Richie said his own doctor had previously given him. After returning to the doctor for answers, Richie said he was told he was suffering from dehydration.

Sources told the outlet that Richie was being cautious and hoped to be discharged Tuesday. The news contrasted with how many attendees remembered the night, with several praising Richie’s energy and stage presence.

The Photos Captured Richie Hours Before His Hospitalization

The concert photos captured Richie at different points throughout the night. In one, he smiled broadly into a microphone while wearing a bright yellow jacket over a dark outfit. Another showed him with both arms extended as fiery visuals glowed behind him.

Wide shots revealed the large crowd at The Muny and the production surrounding Richie, including bright lights, large screens, and pyrotechnic effects. Quieter moments showed him seated at the piano, while other photos captured him performing alongside members of his band.

Footage from his closing number, “All Night Long,” provided a closer look at the final stretch of the show.

Richie had changed into a bright red jacket over an all-black outfit and initially moved around the stage with a microphone in hand. He gestured toward different parts of the crowd and extended his arms as the band played behind him.

Witnesses later told TMZ that Richie appeared to be struggling a bit toward the end of the show. At one point, Richie turned toward the side of the stage and appeared to signal for something.

A crew member soon brought out a black chair and positioned it behind him. Richie remained standing briefly before sitting down and continuing the performance.

Even while seated, he stayed engaged with the number. He sang into his microphone, raised an arm toward the audience, and was later joined closely by two band members playing guitar and bass.

The post featured a photo of Richie and Parton together. He reflected on their time together, referenced her song “I Will Always Love You,” and praised the lasting impact of her music.

The Muny Show Followed an Earlier Health Scare

Richie had also required medical attention during a concert earlier in the summer. During a June 24 concert at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, Richie told the audience that he felt “dizzy” and “strange,” according to the same media outlet.

He sat on a stage platform while performing “Dancing on the Ceiling,” a high-energy part of his set that the publication reported he would not normally perform while seated.

Richie eventually cut the concert short. His saxophonist, Dino Soldo, told the audience that Richie was not feeling well and could not continue the show. Paramedics met Richie backstage and transported him by ambulance to a hospital as a precaution.

In a post shared by Live Nation Chicago, Richie’s team confirmed that doctors had advised him to rest and recover fully. As a result, his June 26 show in Chicago and June 27 concert in Columbus, Ohio, were postponed.

Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire were expected to return to the stage on June 30 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
