The first lady’s earlier addresses offer quite the peek behind the curtain, and her former Paris roommate has a few things to say about the woman living there.
Born in Slovenia on April 26, 1970, Melania Trump moved to New York City in 1996, years before marrying Donald Trump. Before the famous surname came a succession of very different surroundings, and the photographs reveal a few architectural surprises worth lingering over.

Sevnica’s Orange Balconies Deserve a Little Attention
Our first stop is Sevnica, Slovenia, where Melania grew up with a father who sold cars and a mother who made patterns at a textile factory. The childhood apartment block might sound like a modest opening act, but those balconies have absolutely dressed for the occasion.
Against the building’s light beige exterior, ochre-orange panels run beside the windows and through the stacked balconies. A quiet little residential block wearing that much orange? Somebody understood the value of an entrance.
Rows of white-framed windows give the multistory facade its orderly appearance, topped by a gently pitched roof with dark eaves. Then the balconies interrupt all that sensible geometry, and thank goodness for a little personality.

Some jut outward behind thin metal railings; others are partly enclosed within orange-painted sections. Look closely, and the different shapes give the building more depth than its straightforward outline initially suggests.
At street level, clipped hedges border the road, with lawns, parked cars and tall trees around the building. Presidential grandeur was still a very distant prospect, but this everyday childhood address has earned its place in the family album.

The Family House Was Already Working Its Angles
The Sevnica family home brings a noticeably different mood. With its broad windows and assertive dark trim, this house knows which angles flatter it.
The two-story, split-level property has white stucco walls edged with charcoal wood. Low, gently pitched rooflines stretch across the building, giving it a distinctly mid-century appearance. And those upper windows? Generous is the word.

Large panes fitted with roller blinds line the living level, while planted hedges soften the balcony edges. The dark horizontal railings keep the facade looking crisp, even with all that greenery trying to steal a little attention.
Below, a recessed garage sits beside an entrance with dark wood-paneled double doors and glass panes. The house follows a gentle slope, with a curved stone retaining wall supporting the lawn and a paved driveway curling toward the entrance.

The surrounding area also supplies a very persuasive reason to put down the camera. Nearby, Karolina Roštohar’s excursion farm offers homemade wine and award-winning žganci, and frankly, an architectural outing with lunch has considerably more appeal.
The 14-hectare property sits at an altitude of 259 meters in Selce nad Blanco, along the Bizeljsko and Sremič Wine Road. It was among the first farms in the Posavje region to produce its own dry-cured meats.

Its products have appeared at events around Slovenia, including the visitors’ area below the giant ski jump in Planica. Guests can also visit four waterfalls beneath the Bohorje hills and the lime-burning furnaces called apnenince, assuming lunch hasn’t persuaded them to stay put.
Those School Steps Came Long Before the Runway
Before fashion castings entered Melania’s schedule, there was the rather more familiar business of getting to school. Her old primary school‘s entrance displays “OSNOVNA ŠOLA SAVA KLADNIKA SEVNICA” in dark block letters, making this stop very easy to identify.

Mature trees shade the grounds, and autumn leaves scatter across the slopes and paths in the photographs. It is an ordinary school-day setting, which makes its connection to a future first lady all the more intriguing.

Those steps preceded some much grander entrances. In 1985, Melania left Sevnica for Ljubljana, where a new home and a different social scene awaited.
Ljubljana Had Two Sisters Who Dressed to Leave the House
Melania’s journey to Slovenia’s capital followed narrow roads beside the Sava River and passed through coal-mining towns. She attended Ljubljana’s Secondary School of Design and Photography, housed in an arcaded Renaissance monastery. A school with that backdrop? Even the walk to class had some visual ambition.
According to Milano, she lived in an apartment her father, Viktor Knavs, had bought several years earlier on the city’s outskirts. Viktor had also opened a bicycle and car-parts shop there.
The building superintendent, Joze Vuk, lived on the same floor and recalled a disagreement over the property. Viktor was unhappy that, after purchasing his unit, the government allocated some other apartments as rentals for construction workers.
Meanwhile, Melania and her older sister, Ines Knavs, attracted attention for their looks and wardrobes. They wore makeup whenever they left the apartment, so apparently even a trip downstairs deserved a little preparation.
At school, Melania preferred a circle of pop music fans who gathered at the Horse’s Tail bar near the Triple Bridge. The peers listening to the Cure or Metallica were a different crowd.

The photographed University of Ljubljana building introduces an altogether grander face of the city. Its symmetrical Neo-Renaissance facade rises from a heavily textured gray stone ground floor, with arched entrances facing Congress Square.
Up above, a dark mansard roof carries dormer windows and decorative spires around a tiered copper dome. Gilded statues and classical reliefs finish the roofline, because apparently the building wasn’t content with merely being handsome.

A Paris Roommate Had Plenty to Say About Her Priorities
Next comes Paris, and this address has a particularly delicious detail: the apartment was minutes from Notre Dame Cathedral.
In the mid-1990s, Melania shared it with Victoria Silvstedt, the model also known for her Playboy work. Two young models beginning their careers in Paris sounds like an invitation to fabulous nights out, doesn’t it? Hold that thought.
Speaking to WWD in 2016, Victoria said they lived together for a year. Melania worked with Marilyn Gauthier, while Victoria was with Metropolitan.
“We were just starting out together,” Victoria recalled. “At the beginning of your career, you would run to 12 castings a day with your model book, competing with hundreds of girls at each casting.”
Twelve castings a day. Suddenly, sitting down in that apartment sounds more seductive than any glamorous evening out.
“We basically would spend the day on the Métro, on the subway underground,” Victoria continued. “This was the time before cell phones. We were in a different country without speaking the language.”
Their living arrangement, at least, provided some comfort. “It’s not easy to move in with a stranger coming from two different countries. We really, really got along very well,” Victoria said.
As for Melania’s appetite for partying, her former housemate was wonderfully clear. “She would never go out and want to party. She was very determined, very serious in her work.”
So much for the imagined Paris party calendar. Victoria said they later encountered each other only a few times in New York, where Melania’s next address came with a much taller silhouette.
Manhattan Gave Her Four Very Flashy Rooftops
Melania’s first known New York apartment was at Zeckendorf Towers beside Union Square Park. And if you’re looking for a building that makes itself easy to spot, this one has four convincing arguments.

The complex consists of four 29-story residential towers, with reddish-orange brick facades and orderly grids of dark-framed windows. Rounded arches decorate the upper floors, beneath open-truss pyramidal crowns.
Between the brick towers, the historic Consolidated Edison Building supplies a contrasting pale limestone clock tower and tiered belfry. In the foreground, Union Square’s bronze equestrian statue of George Washington adds another recognizable feature to the view.

New York also brought the less photogenic business of immigration paperwork. During a December 2023 appearance at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., covered by Business Insider, Melania recalled securing her status during her modeling career.

Her attorney told the BBC that she arrived on a tourist visa, later obtained work-related visas, and eventually received an EB-1 visa. Her biography states that she became a U.S. citizen in 2006, ten years after moving to New York.
“I recall feeling a tremendous sense of pride and belonging after I recited the US oath of allegiance, as the pathway to citizenship is arduous,” she said.
Today, the White House is Melania Trump‘s home, and her family’s real estate extends well beyond Washington. Still, those orange balconies and that shared Paris apartment have their own irresistible appeal: even one of the world’s most recognizable front doors can’t quite steal all the attention from the addresses that came before it.
