The residents of Sunnydale faced monsters every week, but the cast’s lives after the show included private battles, painful losses, and one father-son resemblance that fans found impossible to ignore.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” premiered in 1997 and turned Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Boreanaz, Nicholas Brendon, and their costars into familiar faces around the world. Nearly three decades later, one actor is working beside his strikingly similar-looking son, while footage of another during his final year left viewers worried about how much he appeared to have changed.
Sarah Michelle Gellar Found Her Way Back to Television
She played Buffy Summers, a teenager expelled from her Los Angeles school after burning down a gym filled with vampires. Arriving at Sunnydale High was supposed to offer a fresh start, but her responsibility as her generation’s chosen Slayer quickly complicated any hope of an ordinary adolescence.
Sarah Michelle had been acting since she was five and spent two seasons on “All My Children” before landing the role that defined her early career. During the show’s run, she appeared in “I Know What You Did Last Summer” with Jennifer Love Hewitt and future husband Freddie Prinze Jr., followed by “Cruel Intentions,” “Scooby-Doo,” and its sequel.
After “Buffy,” she reduced her acting workload while raising her two children and launching Foodstirs, a culinary and lifestyle company she started in 2015. According to her credits, she still appeared in projects such as “The Grudge” films and “Ringer.”
She later returned to episodic television as Kristin Ramsey in “Wolf Pack,” where her experience also made her a mentor to the younger cast. Gellar told THR that she hoped to provide the actors with the support system her own generation never received.
Alyson Hannigan Never Stayed Away for Long
Her character Willow Rosenberg entered Sunnydale High as a shy, overall-wearing student with feelings for her childhood friend, Xander. Her growing confidence led her through relationships with Oz and Tara, while her developing magical abilities eventually carried her into a dangerous period of grief and addiction.
Alyson moved from Willow to another long-running television role with barely a pause. Her career included nine seasons as Lily Aldrin on “How I Met Your Mother,” hosting “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” from 2016 to 2023, and competing on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2023.
She has also remained personally connected to the Buffyverse. Alyson married Alexis Denisof, who played Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, in 2003, and they share two daughters.
Nicholas Brendon’s Life Became Far More Difficult
The actor brought warmth and quick humor to Xander Harris, the ordinary human surrounded by Slayers, witches, vampires, and demons. Xander lacked supernatural abilities, yet he repeatedly proved how much his friends relied on him, later finding love with former vengeance demon Anya.
A promising baseball career had ended because of an injury before Nicholas turned toward acting. “Buffy” became his breakthrough, followed by appearances in “Criminal Minds,” “Private Practice,” and the Bradley Cooper comedy “Kitchen Confidential,” as reflected in his screen work.
Away from the camera, Nicholas endured serious personal problems. He disclosed that he had been molested by a music teacher as a child and later struggled with depression, alcohol, substance abuse, and suicide attempts.
During an emotional 2015 appearance on “Dr. Phil,” Nicholas discussed how the childhood abuse continued to affect him. After leaving the set during an earlier attempt to tape the program, he explained that he had never received therapy for the abuse.
His difficulties repeatedly brought him into contact with law enforcement. Nicholas entered treatment for alcohol problems in 2004, then returned to rehab after a 2010 arrest involving vandalism, resisting arrest, and battery against an officer.
Further arrests followed at hotels in Idaho and Florida, where he was accused of intoxication and property damage. In October 2015, he was arrested after allegedly grabbing his girlfriend by the throat, taking her keys, and damaging her phone.
Nicholas later entered a 90-day treatment program and told supporters, “I love you all so much and I truly do appreciate all of your love and support. We’re going to beat this.”
Another alleged attack involving a girlfriend led to his arrest in 2017 and, eventually, a domestic violence charge and probation. His most unusual arrest came in Indiana in August 2021, when police alleged that he had used false information to obtain prescription medication.
According to an account of his troubled years, Nicholas handed officers an identification card bearing the name Kelton Schultz. He reportedly claimed Schultz was his brother, although his actual identical twin is named Kelly Donovan.
His Final Video Left Viewers Worried
Nicholas’ health also declined. He underwent spinal surgery, experienced at least two cardiac events, and received a diagnosis of tachycardia, described as a congenital heart defect.
Around a year before his death, Nicholas shared what became his final Instagram video. He appeared at home with someone named Nicky and explained that they had made a fire outside before the cold drove them indoors.
The relaxed setting could not distract viewers from his appearance. Nicholas had a dark mark on his cheek, and some followers believed he looked unwell or in pain. One commenter wrote, “I knew he was not well and in pain with these last videos, wished I lived close so I could check on him, seemed so sad 😥 [sic].”

Reactions shared beneath a YouTube reaction video were equally concerned. One person commented, “this hurts but it’s because of what’s going on in the world, alot of accusations and unhealed people [sic].”
Another viewer was startled by his physical change, writing, “He is unrecognizable, looking 70+ years old.”

Sadly, Nicholas died on March 20, 2026, at 54. A longtime friend who had been staying overnight to care for him discovered him positioned as though he were asleep.
Putnam County Coroner Todd Zeiner initially told People that there were no indications of foul play. Investigators were also reviewing recently uploaded videos for possible signs that Nicholas had been ill.

On May 5, Zeiner announced that the death was natural. The coroner’s report identified atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, with acute pneumonia and a previous heart attack contributing. Nicholas’ right coronary artery was 90 percent blocked.
Anthony Head Returned Home Before Finding New Villains
He played Rupert Giles, Sunnydale High’s mild-mannered librarian and Buffy’s Watcher. Beneath the tweed and careful manners was a man trained to guide the Slayer through every demon, prophecy, and apocalypse she encountered.
Anthony reduced his role during Season 6 and returned to England to spend more time with his family, particularly his young daughter. His later roles ranged from “Merlin” and “Doctor Who: The Infinite Quest” to “The Stranger,” “Bridgerton,” and “Ted Lasso,” where he played the thoroughly unpleasant Rupert Mannion.
The actor died from complications of pneumonia on June 5, 2026. He was 72.
David Boreanaz Brought a Familiar Face to His Latest Set
The actor played Angel, the centuries-old vampire whose restored soul left him burdened by remorse. His romance with Buffy became one of the series’ defining relationships, even as losing his soul transformed him back into the murderous Angelus.
After three seasons, David carried the character into the Los Angeles-based spinoff “Angel.” His remarkable run on television continued with “Bones” and “SEAL Team,” contributing to roughly 350 episodes across those two series alone, according to his filmography.
In June 2026, David was preparing another television chapter as the lead of “The Rockford Files” reboot. The project reimagines the James Garner series about Jim Rockford, a wrongly convicted former prisoner who becomes a private investigator.
However, the pilot came with a family connection. David’s 24-year-old son, Jaden Boreanaz, appeared alongside him, and their resemblance had already become a favorite subject among fans who have seen pictures of the young man online.
One Instagram commenter told Jaden, “Wow! You’re looking more and more like your pops everyday! Whoop whoop! [sic]” Beneath another Instagram post, someone wrote, “He looks so much like David.” Another agreed, “Looks like his Dad.”
A third person noticed features from both parents, commenting, “He is handsome 🤗 , he has your eyes and David’s smile! Amazing Jaden [sic].”
Jaden made his professional acting debut in a 2017 episode of “Bones,” but working with his father on “The Rockford Files” became considerably more physical. David revealed that his son struck him with a stick during their scene, occasionally missing the protective pad attached to his leg.
“You show up on set, you let it go, you just do your thing and live the moment, and he lived it pretty hard,” David said. “He got me a few times.”
James Marsters Made Spike’s Accent Convincing
He played Spike, the blond British vampire who arrived as an enemy before becoming a complicated ally and romantic interest for Buffy. Despite the character’s convincing look and voice, Marsters is neither naturally blond nor English.
The California-born, Juilliard-trained actor later appeared in “Angel,” “Smallville,” “Runaways,” and the acclaimed independent film “A Bread Factory.” His credits also include voicing Zamasu in “Dragon Ball Super,” while his music career has included solo work and the band Ghost of the Robot.
Charisma Carpenter Spoke Publicly About Her Treatment
The actress played Cordelia Chase, Sunnydale High’s sharp-tongued queen bee. Cordelia later moved to Los Angeles in “Angel,” where she became an essential member of his supernatural investigation team.
Charisma went on to appear in “Charmed,” “Veronica Mars,” “The Lying Game,” “The Expendables,” and its sequel, along with procedural dramas including “Blue Bloods” and “Chicago P.D.,” as listed among her roles.
Years later, Charisma publicly accused creator Joss Whedon of prolonged “hostile and toxic” behavior, including his treatment of her while she was pregnant. In her account, she said he fired her from “Angel” after she gave birth.
Eliza Dushku Chose a New Profession
She joined the series as Faith, a reckless new Slayer activated after Buffy’s brief death. Faith’s anger and isolation made her unpredictable, placing her on both sides of the fight.
Eliza had already appeared in “True Lies” and “Bring It On.” Her later projects included “Tru Calling,” “Wrong Turn,” “Bottle Shock,” “The Alphabet Killer,” and Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse.”
In 2018, she received a $9.5 million settlement after alleging that “Bull” star Michael Weatherly sexually harassed her while she had a recurring role on the show. She has since left entertainment and trained as a therapist.
Michelle Trachtenberg’s Arrival Changed Sunnydale
The actress joined Season 5 as Dawn Summers, Buffy’s suddenly present younger sister. The mystery was eventually explained when Dawn was revealed to be a mystical key transformed into human form, with everyone’s memories altered to accommodate her.
Michelle, already known for “Harriet the Spy” and “Inspector Gadget,” later appeared in “EuroTrip,” “Ice Princess,” “17 Again,” and “Gossip Girl.” Her extensive career also included a return as Georgina Sparks in the 2022 reboot of “Gossip Girl.” Sadly, she died on February 26, 2025. She was 39.
Seth Green Built a Stop-Motion Empire
The actor played Oz, the soft-spoken guitarist who became Willow’s boyfriend before discovering that he was a werewolf. He had previously appeared as a vampire in the 1992 “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” movie.
After leaving the series, Seth appeared in “The Italian Job,” voiced Howard the Duck in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise, and starred in “Dads.” His most enduring post-“Buffy” achievement was co-creating and starring in “Robot Chicken,” as his credits show.
Emma Caulfield Faced a Private Diagnosis
She played Anya, a vengeance demon forced to adjust to mortality after losing her powers. Her blunt observations and eventual relationship with Xander made her one of Sunnydale’s most distinctive residents.
Emma later worked on “Monk,” “Life Unexpected,” “Bandwagon: The Series,” and Marvel’s “WandaVision,” returning as Dottie in “Agatha All Along.” Her screen history continued even as she managed a serious health condition.
The actress married Mark Leslie Ford in 2017, and they have a daughter. In 2022, she revealed that she had been living with multiple sclerosis for approximately a decade.
Amber Benson Expanded the Buffyverse
The actress portrayed Tara Maclay, the gentle witch whose relationship with Willow became central to both characters. Tara’s death pushed Willow into grief and dark magic.

His character Jonathan Levinson began as a relatively minor Sunnydale student before gaining a darker and more prominent storyline. Offscreen, Strong’s career grew well beyond the role.
After joining “Gilmore Girls” as Doyle McMaster, Strong found major success as a writer. His career includes two Emmy wins for “Game Change,” co-writing “The Butler” and two “Hunger Games” films, co-creating “Empire,” and creating “Dopesick.”
