Catherine, Princess of Wales, brought a playful side to her latest royal engagement when she picked up a shinty stick during a visit to the Isle of Bute. From her time on the pitch to candid moments with locals, the photographs from the day capture some unexpectedly lively scenes.
Catherine, Princess of Wales, arrived on the Isle of Bute for what looked like a fairly typical royal engagement — until she picked up a curved wooden shinty stick and stepped onto the pitch.
What happened next produced a string of photographs that show the princess in a considerably more playful mood than a formal royal visit might suggest.

A Royal Visit With Plenty Going On
Catherine and Prince William visited the Isle of Bute in Scotland on September 17, marking their first official visit to the island. The couple visited their namesake town of Rothesay as part of a day designed to highlight community, connection, and volunteering.
The visit was particularly significant because William and Catherine are known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay when carrying out official engagements in Scotland. William inherited the Duke of Rothesay title after his father, King Charles III, became monarch in September 2022, according to Royal Central.

Their itinerary included several stops around the island, including Bute Shinty Club, Ettrick Bay and the community-owned Anchor Tavern Pub. The couple also met residents, posed for selfies and took part in activities that put them directly among the local community.
The timing of the visit also placed the couple in the middle of a particularly busy period for the royal family, with Prince Harry making his first public outing since returning to the U.K. and fresh attention surrounding claims in Earl Spencer’s memoir about his sister, Diana, Princess of Wales.
A WalesOnline report described it as “business as usual” for William and Catherine as the pair continued their scheduled engagements despite the wider royal-family headlines.

Catherine and William Were Invited to Play Shinty
The couple began their day at Bute Shinty Club, a volunteer-run organization founded in 1946 that has become an important social and sporting hub for the island. Shinty is one of Scotland’s oldest traditional sports, and Catherine and William were invited to have a go at striking the small leather ball with the sport’s distinctive curved wooden stick, known as a caman.
According to People, Catherine, who grew up playing field hockey and was a team captain during her school days, stepped up to try the sport herself.

She missed her first attempt before making a strong connection with the ball on her next try, drawing applause from those watching. William also had a shaky beginning, laughing when his first effort barely sent the ball forward before making better contact on his second attempt.
But the action on the pitch was only part of what made the visit so visually interesting.

Then Catherine Picked Up the Shinty Stick
The photographs from Bute Shinty Club show Catherine switching between focused concentration and infectious laughter as she moved through the engagement. In one image, she is seen laughing and chatting with people around the club, looking relaxed as she speaks with attendees.
The candid moment offers a glimpse of the princess away from the more formal poses typically associated with royal appearances.

In another photograph, Catherine is captured walking toward the pitch, accompanied by a member of the club. Her long dark coat is open as she makes her way across the grass, with her olive green turtleneck and dark brown trousers completing the understated outfit.

She Looked Ready to Give Shinty a Proper Try
Once Catherine got involved, the cameras captured her holding the caman on the pitch with a broad smile on her face. In an Instagram post, Entertainment Tonight playfully praised the Princess of Wales for her swing while joking that she needed a little warm-up first.
The post also pointed out Catherine’s sporting background, noting that she grew up playing field hockey and had been a team captain during her school days. One photograph captures that sporting side particularly well, with Catherine standing on the pitch while gripping the shinty stick and smiling.

The fourth image takes the scene a step further. Catherine is shown mid-swing, leaning into the shot as the ball travels across the pitch, while William and several players watch from behind.
The sequence makes it easy to see why the shinty portion of the visit quickly became one of the most eye-catching moments from the day.

Then Came the Comments About the Photos
The shinty photographs themselves prompted plenty of reactions online, with some viewers focusing on Catherine’s playful sporting moment and others commenting on her appearance. One commenter praised William’s choice of wife, saying, “William did well by marrying this exceptional woman! Sporty spice!!”
Another person focused on Catherine’s hair and sense of humor, writing, “The extra hair and hilarity.” Not everyone was impressed, however. A separate commenter said, “This is so pathetic. They are trying to copy Meghan n Prince Harry.”

The reactions continued in another discussion about the couple’s appearance and public duties. One commenter said, “They need to be seen to be working now, especially with Harry & Megan back on the seen [sic].”
Another commenter focused on Princess Catherine‘s trousers and legs, saying, “Omg lol at Kate’s legs in those ‘skinny’ trousers! They look like lanky arms!! She’s always been slim, but that’s worryingly thin.”
As previously reported, the couple’s day on the Isle of Bute was full of memorable encounters beyond the playing field.

The Visit Shifted From the Playing Field to the Shore
At Ettrick Bay, William and Catherine met people involved with Beachwatch Bute and learned about efforts to protect and preserve the island’s coastline. The couple joined a beach ranger and other supporters for a cleanup.

The engagements reflected the wider purpose of their trip, which centered on community, connection, and volunteering. Their itinerary also included the community-owned Anchor Tavern Pub, where they were expected to hear about the importance of everyday interactions.
But some of the day’s closest contact with local people happened outside the formal schedule.
A Bouquet Led to a Much Closer Greeting
A second video posted by King’s Guard Tours captured Catherine mingling with people gathered in Rothesay. By then, the scene looked very different from her arrival, when she had greeted well-wishers from inside the vehicle.
Now among the crowd, Catherine spoke with people at close range while phones and cameras captured the interactions around her. During one of those greetings, she stopped with a woman dressed in a black coat and pink plaid scarf, who presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

The exchange soon became more personal. Catherine moved closer and wrapped her arms around the woman in a tight embrace, which the woman returned as both appeared to smile.
Their interaction continued after the hug. Still holding the bouquet, Catherine stood beside the woman for a photograph, and the pair remained close as they posed together.

The woman was not identified, and what she and Catherine said during their encounter was unclear. But the warmth visible in their exchange quickly became part of the conversation surrounding the video.
The Hug Raised Questions About Royal Protocol
In another discussion, one netizen wondered whether customs surrounding physical contact with members of the royal family had changed.
“The rules must be loosening up a bit. Not long ago, the public was not allowed to touch members of the royal family,” the person said. Another reaction took a different direction, with one admirer declaring, “She was born to be queen❤️.”
Princess Catherine‘s safety was on someone else’s mind. That person remarked, “Sorry just woried bout her safety. 🦋” A different voice focused on personal boundaries, writing, “People to need to respect her space and not overstep the mark.”
However, the Royal Family’s official website says there are “no obligatory codes of behaviour” when meeting a member of the royal family. It notes that some people choose traditional greetings, such as a bow or curtsy, while others simply shake hands.
While William and Catherine’s Isle of Bute visit put their public duties and community work in focus, another royal family story has centered on William’s relationship with Prince Harry and the position he shares with Charles.

As previously reported, Harry’s return to England has highlighted the sharp difference between his ties with Charles and William. One issue, however, puts the King and his heir firmly on the same side.
Harry and Meghan Markle returned to England on August 26, 2026, shortly after revealing plans to establish a non-royal home base in the U.K., according to People.
Harry and Meghan stepped away from their roles as working royals in 2020 and later settled in Montecito, California. They returned to Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The visit comes as Harry’s relationships with his father and older brother have taken noticeably different directions.
Harry Has Met With Charles But Still Isn’t Speaking With William
Harry’s recent contact with Charles included a July meeting at Highgrove with the monarch and Queen Camilla.
No comparable contact has taken place between Harry and William. The magazine reported that the brothers remain estranged and are not communicating directly.

The difference between those two relationships has not, however, created a split between Charles and William over Harry and Meghan’s position in relation to the monarchy.
