Cast as Nellie in the 1970s, she spent years bringing the character’s sharp tongue, selfish behavior, and endless schemes to life, earning a place among television’s most recognizable young antagonists.

Although the series ended more than four decades ago, Nellie’s legacy has endured.

Fans Still Remember Nellie Oleson

Her recent return to the “Little House” universe reminded longtime viewers just how lasting Nellie’s impact has been.

She Returned to ‘Little House’ — But Not as Nellie

More than 50 years after first bringing Nellie to life, Arngrim returned to the franchise that made her famous.

Her appearance comes in Netflix’s 2026 reimagining of Wilder’s beloved “Little House” books, inspired by the author’s childhood on the American frontier. Blending family drama with a frontier survival story, the series stars Alice Halsey as Laura and has already been renewed for a second season.

Season 2 will take the Ingalls family to Walnut Grove, Minnesota, where viewers will meet one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters: Laura’s longtime rival, Nellie, played by Willa Dunn.

The new season will also introduce Charlotte Sullivan as Nellie’s quick-witted mother, Margaret Oleson, and Rachelle Lefevre as beloved schoolteacher Eva Beadle, who becomes an important mentor to Laura and her sister, Mary.

Arngrim welcomed the announcement of a new actress stepping into the iconic role. Reflecting on Dunn’s casting, she told Netflix’s Tudum, “Oh my God — I’ve been waiting for the new Nellie for years. I absolutely went bonkers.”

Creating Ida’s Rugged Appearance

Arngrim said the production’s commitment to historical accuracy impressed her from the moment she tried on the costume.

Hayden Panettiere, who began acting as a child before going on to star in “Heroes” and “Nashville,” has died at 36. Her representative confirmed her death to various outlets, though further details surrounding the circumstances were not immediately available

Her father, Skip Panettiere, announced the loss in a statement in which he remembered his daughter for the impact she had on those closest to her and the audiences who knew her through her work. He shared:

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

The actress remembered pouring herself a glass of wine so full that it “almost overflowed,” and her drinking worsened after she returned to work on “Nashville.”

The tragedy came shortly after Tree had been seen enjoying South America. He performed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on June 4, before later sharing a video from Brazil, playing soccer in one of the neighborhoods.
