Donike Gocaj, 56, a grandmother from Briarcliff Manor in Westchester County, had just parked her Mercedes on a Manhattan street on the night of Monday, May 18, 2026, less than a block from one of the most expensive storefronts in the city. She never made it to her destination.

Where Was She, and What Did She Walk Into?

The stretch of East 52nd Street where Gocaj parked sits directly outside Cartier’s flagship New York City store, one of Midtown Manhattan’s most recognizable blocks. It was nearly 11:20 p.m., the street was dark, and there was nothing to warn her of what lay just beyond her car door.

Fire safety director Carlton Wood was on his way to work when he watched Gocaj step out of her vehicle, close the door behind her, and take a single step forward.

A moment later, she dropped 10 feet into an uncovered drain below, disappearing from sight instantly. Of course, Wood’s instincts kicked right in, and he ran toward the hole.

He found her sitting at the bottom in a steaming hot puddle of water, legs stretched forward, looking up and begging for help.

What Did Bystanders Do to Try to Save Her?

Wood called 911 while other witnesses at the scene scrambled to act. Several people attempted to lower a man into the hole by his arms, hoping Gocaj could grab onto his feet and be pulled to safety, but the depth made it impossible.

Mileena, 12, attended the Middle School of Plainville, where she was remembered by those who knew her as a girl who always had a smile to offer.

Her classmate and neighbor Niko shared a bus stop with her, trading hellos and goodbyes before and after school. “She wasn’t at school too much; she was absent like two or three times a week,” he said.

When the police vehicles started appearing on his street that Friday, he was simply confused. “I heard that she was home or she wasn’t. It started with a bunch of cars, and then it was a SWAT truck in our driveway,” he explained.

The school announced it would make counseling resources available to students the following Monday.

Little Ava, just four years old, had her own circle too. Her mother, Felisha, had become close friends with a woman named Miranda Berger after the two met while both were pregnant. Their daughters, Ava and Bailey, were born just two weeks apart and had spent their short lives playing together.

According to WTHR 13 News, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded just before 1 a.m. on May 3, 2026, to the 4000 block of North Park Avenue, near North College Avenue and 38th Street, after a report of a person shot. When police arrived, they found 38-year-old Brittany Marie Members suffering from gunshot wounds.

Members was taken to a hospital, where she later died. Shortly afterward, IMPD said officers were called to Methodist Hospital after two people walked in with gunshot injuries, and detectives later learned those victims had also been shot on North Park Avenue.

According to reports, while one victim was said to be in critical condition, the other was stated to be in stable condition. Additionally, as stated by the police, an additional person was injured as they tried to leave the house.

The shooting reportedly happened at what investigators believe was a post-prom house party at a short-term rental home. Officials said there had been a large number of people at the scene, including teenagers.

At first, the basic details were already shocking enough: A rental home, a post-prom party, young people gathered late at night, and then gunfire. But as neighbors began speaking out, the picture became even more disturbing.

Neighbors Provide Chilling Witness Accounts

Jack Anderson said gunshots woke him up just after 1 a.m. He went out to his front porch and saw teenagers running for safety from a yellow house not far from his own. “Three houses down, we could almost feel the vibration. It was probably 60+ shots that came through, and it was absolute chaos,” the witness said.

Anderson also noted that the gunfire woke up his two young children. In the middle of the panic, some neighbors reportedly let teens into their homes while they waited for police to secure the scene.

Mitchell also heard the scene unfold from inside his home. “Screaming from every which way. I thought I was in the wild, wild west or either [sic] the war. It was an unfortunate situation,” he said.

Mitchell also divulged that the house became a rental in 2025 and had not caused problems before that night. Still, as the evening went on, he reportedly became uneasy after seeing the number of young people and cars gathering on the street.

He and other neighbors said cars had been double-parked along the street before the party began. Mitchell estimated around 100 people showed up. And as more details emerged, the story became even more unsettling…

Additionally, the shooting ensued when an SUV full of gunmen opened fire on the house. Authorities reportedly found approximately 100 shell casings from multiple guns at the scene.

The gunfire was described as three volleys: Two from the assailants and one from people at the house. Fox 59 further reported that a photograph from earlier in the evening showed three partygoers displaying four guns while standing in front of party decorations. Two of those weapons were described as large semi-automatic rifles with banana clips.

Neighbor Brandi Mitchell, who awoke to a bullet hole in the front window of her home at 1 a.m. Sunday, described waking up to the horror after a bullet hit her home.

“It was pure pandemonium, it was scary, it was terrifying, and I would have likened it to some type of war movie,” she said. “We heard a lot of yelling, a lot of screaming, so we just knew at that point it was gunfire, and I just immediately took cover.”

Her account echoed what other neighbors had said: This was sudden, loud, and deeply frightening. As Saturday night continued, the neighbor became more uncomfortable as more young people arrived.

“And when there’s a lot of people, and didn’t look like a lot of supervision after those hours, it could get a little scary [sic],” she said.

That fear would prove horribly justified. Neighbors also told Fox 59/CBS4 that party planners returned to the home Sunday night and removed the decorations nearly 24 hours after the shooting.

City Officials Speak Out on the Matter

City officials also began looking at what could come next. Deputy Public Safety Director Tony Lopez said violence interrupters from the City’s Office of Public Health and Safety would reach out to victims and the community in an effort to prevent possible retaliation.

“We don’t want that one shooting to become four, and we don’t want that one homicide to become four,” Lopez said. Lopez also shared that staff would be “engaging with the family, engaging with others, trying to figure out if retaliation is possible, where’s the retaliation coming from.”

Friends said Melanie’s daughters were at the center of everything she did. “Her daughters were everything to her for sure,” Mirielle said. “She wasn’t somebody that just sat at home. She was out there. So many people know her. It’s just so sad and so tragic.”

Speaking about Melanie, Willard said, “She was an extremely giving person in a professional capacity; she was an expert in the areas of probate, foreclosure, those types of things.”

He added that he was heartbroken to learn of the tragedy while recalling an interaction he had with one of the deceased.

“I talked to her probably a month and a half ago, no sign or any indication of something like this, and obviously if there was some sign of that, not only would I have said something but taken some action, but there was simply nothing that gave me any indication that this could have potentially occurred,” he added.

The grief extended far beyond South Florida’s real estate community. Many were also mourning the two young girls who were at the center of Melanie’s world.

Remembering Savannah and Sienna

The loss has been felt especially hard among the children’s classmates, teachers, and teammates. Savannah and Sienna attended Downtown Doral Charter schools, where grief counselors were brought in to help students and staff process the tragedy. In a message to families, school officials said the sisters were deeply loved by teachers and classmates.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends, our faculty, and staff at our elementary school, where they currently attended, and our upper school. Both students were deeply loved by their school, their teachers, and their peers,” Head of Schools Jeannette Acevedo-Isenberg said.

Hayden Panettiere and her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, grew up in Hollywood and both found their way into acting as children, according to their IMDb profiles.

According to ABC News, his final television role came in 2019, when he appeared as Casper, a member of the Hilltop Colony, on The Walking Dead. Away from acting, his artwork became an important way for him to express himself.

The Siblings Who Grew Up in the Spotlight

A few weeks before his death, Jansen even shared a playful glimpse of his relationship with his older sister. In January 2023, he posted a photo of Hayden cutting his hair, joking in the caption, “Not the first haircut she’s tried to give me.”

The post would become an unexpectedly poignant glimpse of the siblings together shortly before tragedy struck.

Jansen’s Sudden Death Shocked His Family

Jansen died in February 2023 at just 28 years old, leaving his family struggling to understand a loss that came without warning. In a statement to ABC News, the Panettiere family described Jansen as a warm, creative person whose personality lived on through his art and the memories he left behind.

“Jansen’s heart could be seen in his eyes, and his charm in his brilliant, engaging smile; his soul in his masterful and revealing paintings, and the joy of life in his dry wit,” the family said. They added, “His charisma, warmth, compassion for others, and his creative spirit will live forever in our hearts and in the hearts of all whom he encountered.”

The family also revealed what the medical examiner had determined about his death. “Though it offers little solace, the Medical Examiner reported Jansen’s sudden passing was due to cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), coupled with aortic valve complications,” they said.

At the time, the revelation gave the family an official explanation for Jansen’s sudden passing, even if it could not explain away the shock of losing him so young.

Hayden Kept Returning to the Brother She Lost

For Hayden, however, Jansen’s death was not something she simply left in the past. Two years after his death, she marked the anniversary with an emotional Instagram tribute, writing, “2 years ago today, I lost my little brother. This amazing human being touched the lives of so many. Especially mine.”

She continued:

“The pain isn’t quantifiable. I pray you’re in a beautiful place, J. That you’re at peace and that when all is said and done…I’ll see you again. Rest easy, brother. You are so missed and beyond loved. 💜”

By September 2025, her grief was still unmistakably present. Hayden marked what would have been Jansen’s 31st birthday by describing him as “a remarkable human being” who was “wise beyond his years” and operated at “a higher spiritual level than anyone I’ve ever met.”

She wrote that she missed him every day but believed his spirit remained close to her family. “I love you to infinity and beyond, J, and we will be together again one day,” she wrote.

Then Hayden Revealed Why the Loss Still Haunted Her

The most painful part of Hayden’s story emerged in 2026, as she prepared to release her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. In an interview with E! News, Hayden admitted that writing about Jansen was the hardest part of the book. Her grief, she explained, was complicated by something much heavier than simply missing her younger brother.

Hayden said:

“It’s all the time. It just evolves, especially with a sibling and being the older sibling. You’re just riddled with guilt that you didn’t do your job.”

In her memoir and related interviews, she revealed that Jansen had struggled with serious substance abuse, including crack and heroin. Hayden said learning how severe his addiction had become left her shocked and made her question whether she could have done more.

She had tried to help him, including getting him into treatment and maintaining contact with his therapist. But Jansen did not experience treatment in the same way Hayden had. The Remember the Titans actress explained that she had found peace in treatment, while Jansen felt “caged” by it.

The difference left her wrestling with an agonizing question: whether she had actually known how to help him.

Hayden’s Guilt Went Back Years

“I, of all people, should have understood,” she told E!, before acknowledging the painful reality that there are limits to what one person can do for another. “You can’t help somebody who doesn’t want to help themselves. It’s just a sad fact.”

In a Jay Shetty Podcast interview promoting her memoir, Hayden went even deeper into that feeling of failure. Speaking about Jansen, she described him as the person who understood her better than almost anyone else because they had grown up experiencing the same unusual world together.

She recalled feeling that she had failed to keep him safe and said she had tried to warn the people around her that his addiction was serious. She also remembered trying to intervene before he was even an adult, “I mean, I remember before he was eighteen, begging my parents to send him to military school, before he was capable of making decisions for himself, that he needed to; they needed to do this for his safety, and he needed to be disciplined.”

Even amid that guilt, Hayden spoke lovingly about what Jansen left behind.

She Found a Way to Keep Him Close

His paintings became particularly precious to her because they gave her something tangible that still felt connected to him.

“He was an incredible artist,” she told E!. “My favorite thing that I have is his paintings. I feel like he’s so alive in those paintings, like that part of him is immortalized because of the part of himself that he put into his art.”

Jansen’s death came after years in which Hayden had already been confronting her own struggles with addiction, anxiety, postpartum depression and mental health.

Hayden Was Also Trying to Rebuild Her Own Life

In her May 2026 conversation with Jay Shetty, she pushed back against the idea that she had simply been forced into treatment.

“The misconception is that I have been in the past forced into treatment when, in fact, I have been the one who sought it out, saying, ‘I desperately need help. I don’t, you know, I know this is going to look terrible, but I cannot live like this anymore.'”

Hayden also addressed persistent claims about her relationship with her daughter, Kaya Klitschko, explaining that the decision for Kaya to live in Europe was made while Hayden was struggling with her mental health and had not yet recovered.

Hayden Explained Why Her Daughter Lived in Europe

“I was struggling with mental health and anxiety and the postpartum and having to act my way through it and just feeling like I completely lost myself,” she said.

When Kaya was about 2½ years old, Hayden said her father, Wladimir Klitschko, decided it would be best for her to live in Europe. Hayden admitted she initially had a very difficult reaction to the decision.

“When that first happened, I did not have a good reaction to it. I went like [a] mother lion. I would have burnt the world down for my child,” she said.

But as Hayden recovered, she said she began looking at the situation differently. Kaya had already spent years traveling between the United States and Europe, where she had family, friends, extracurricular activities and a life she was comfortable with.

“So by the time I finally got healthy, I felt like it would have been unfair of me and selfish of me to try to pull her away from this life that she had been created,” Hayden explained.

She said Kaya was “living an incredible life” and described her as a happy child who knew she had two parents who loved her. “I know in my heart that she feels supported. I have an incredible relationship with her. I go, I travel as much as I can. I see her. I do spend a lot of time on FaceTime with her,” Hayden said.

She also emphasized the depth of their relationship, saying, “We talk about really deep things. We have a really intense, incredible bond and I’m very grateful for that.”

Hayden added, “I know that she knows that she has two parents who would do anything in the world to make sure that she is happy and healthy mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually.”

She was particularly firm about the suggestion that Kaya felt abandoned. “She in no way feels abandoned — and that’s something that I’ve made sure to stay on top of and be very aware of.”

Hayden also pushed back against the broader narrative surrounding her decision as a mother. “The idea that anybody would think that I would just give away my child and be okay with it is heartbreaking.”

She said the idea that she had simply given up her daughter “could not be farther from the truth” and hoped sharing her side of the story would make the circumstances clearer.

After she had publicly revisited some of the most painful chapters of her life, Hayden died suddenly on August 16, 2026.
