Unlike a shark or jellyfish, the organism cannot be spotted before contact. It occurs naturally in coastal environments. The bacteria can also be present on seafood that appears fresh. That makes prevention dependent on personal precautions rather than visual clues.

What Is Hiding in the Coastal Water?

The organism behind the warning is Vibrio vulnificus, a particularly dangerous species within the Vibrio family. It is sometimes described as “flesh-eating bacteria,” although it is not a virus and does not literally consume flesh.

Vibrio bacteria are single-celled organisms that live naturally in salt water and brackish water. Brackish water contains both fresh and salt water and is commonly found where rivers flow into the ocean.

Their numbers generally rise between May and October as coastal water becomes warmer. Algae also grow more heavily in warm conditions, providing an environment where the bacteria can multiply.

Around a dozen Vibrio species can cause the illness known as vibriosis. The species most frequently linked to human disease in the United States include Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio alginolyticus, and Vibrio vulnificus.

Other Vibrio strains can cause cholera, but the current Louisiana warning concerns vibriosis. Among the species responsible for causing this condition, Vibrio vulnificus stands out as one of the most severe.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 80,000 vibriosis cases occur across the United States each year. About 52,000 are believed to result from contaminated food.

Dr. Benjamin Brock, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, described the severity bluntly.

“Vibrio Vulnificus is one of the most severe types of infections from this genus of bacteria,” Brock said, according to the Louisiana Sportsman. “Even with proper treatment, the outcomes are still 20 percent mortality.”

How Can Someone Become Infected?

There are two main routes of infection. A person can expose an open wound to coastal water, or they can eat raw or insufficiently cooked seafood.

All nine Louisiana patients identified in 2026 became infected through wounds exposed to seawater. That pattern puts swimmers and people working or relaxing on the water in a particularly vulnerable position.

Anyone can contract a Vibrio infection, but certain health conditions sharply increase the chance of serious complications. Every person included in Louisiana’s 2026 case count had an underlying condition.

The CDC guidance identifies liver disease, cancer, diabetes, HIV, and thalassemia as risk factors. Immune-suppressing treatment can also leave a patient less able to fight the infection.

People who take medication that reduces stomach acid may be at increased risk, as can those who recently underwent stomach surgery. These factors do not guarantee severe illness, but they make caution around coastal water and raw seafood especially important.

Florida has also recorded serious cases in 2026. Fourteen people had been sickened, including one person who died in Marion County and another who died in Palm Beach.

Severe weather can add to the danger by forcing brackish water inland. Florida officials have warned that storms and hurricanes may increase the chance of exposure in places that are not usually reached by coastal water.

That risk was especially visible in 2024, the year Hurricanes Helene and Milton struck. Florida reported 19 deaths associated with Vibrio vulnificus that year.

What Symptoms Should People Watch For?

The symptoms depend partly on how the bacteria entered the body and whether the infection has spread. A food-related case can cause watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever and chills.

A wound infection may produce fever along with redness, swelling, warmth, and increasing pain around the affected area. The skin may change color or begin leaking fluid.

Redness or soreness after coastal-water exposure should never be dismissed automatically as an ordinary irritated cut. Worsening warmth, swelling, discoloration, or discharge can signal a rapidly developing infection.

If the bacteria reaches the bloodstream, the danger escalates. Patients may experience fever, chills, severe drops in blood pressure, and blistering skin sores.

A patient may also become confused or delirious. Falling blood pressure can indicate that the infection is progressing into a systemic emergency.

In some patients, Vibrio causes necrotizing fasciitis, a severe condition in which tissue surrounding an open wound dies. Public health experts note that group A Streptococcus, rather than Vibrio, remains the most common cause of necrotizing fasciitis in the United States.

The popular “flesh-eating” label can therefore be medically imprecise, but the tissue damage itself is real. Serious cases may require intensive care, surgery, or amputation.

How Quickly Can the Infection Become Dangerous?

Speed is one of the most disturbing features of Vibrio vulnificus. About one in five infected people dies, sometimes within one or two days after becoming ill. Brock said a skin infection may spread across an entire limb within 12 to 24 hours.

Within 24 to 36 hours, some patients develop sepsis and organ failure. A small scratch without symptoms does not necessarily require an immediate hospital visit.

“If a person just has a scratch on the leg, I don’t think that person necessarily needs to get checked out,” Brock said. “However, a person who starts developing signs of infection definitely needs to get checked out properly.”

He stressed that patients fare better when appropriate antibiotics are started early. Waiting to see whether rapidly worsening symptoms resolve on their own can cost precious treatment time.

Louisiana authorities advised residents to seek medical attention immediately if a wound exposed to brackish or salt water becomes red, swollen, painful, warm or discolored. Patients should specifically tell the healthcare provider about the water exposure.

That detail can help medical professionals identify the suspected infection and choose the right tests. Vibrio is diagnosed when the bacteria is found in a patient’s wound, blood or stool.

People should also tell their provider if they recently consumed raw or undercooked seafood, particularly oysters. Exposure to raw seafood or its drippings through an open wound is equally important to mention.

What Can Residents Do Before Entering the Water?

People with open wounds should stay out of salt water and brackish water whenever possible. Any wound exposed to potentially contaminated water should be washed thoroughly with soap and clean water afterward.

Gloves can help protect people who handle raw fish or shellfish, particularly anyone with a cut on the hands. Care is also needed while baiting hooks, cleaning a catch, or handling sharp shells.

Seafood should be cooked thoroughly rather than eaten raw. Cooked items must be kept separate from raw seafood and from any juices that could contaminate prepared food.
