A Neighbor Heard ‘A Bunch of Commotion’ in the Hallway

One neighbor, Micah Lee, told WYFF4 that he was home Sunday when he became aware of unusual activity in the building. “It was yesterday afternoon, and, just a bunch of commotion in the hallway,” Lee revealed. “The halls are pretty hollow, so noise echoes throughout.”

He continued, “And I had just heard about someone collapsing. And then afterwards there was talk about cardiac arrest. I can’t confirm any of that. That’s just what I’ve heard.”

Lee’s description lines up with the Coroner’s Office confirming that the initial 911 call involved a reported cardiac arrest, although the official cause of Panettiere’s death has not yet been released.

Police have also said their preliminary investigation did not indicate foul play or suspicious circumstances. Another resident of Judson Mill Lofts on Easley Bridge Road offered a similarly unsettling glimpse into the aftermath, telling Page Six they were stunned to discover who had died inside the complex.

“I was shocked,” the neighbor said, explaining they had never seen Panettiere there before news of her death broke. The resident said they did not know how long the actress had been staying at the property and were not even sure she had left the apartment during her time there.

According to the neighbor, management subsequently contacted residents and reassured them that the incident was not believed to be criminal and there was no reason for them to fear for their safety. “It’s still kind of jarring to hear that someone of her stature was here and then that tragically happened to her,” the resident added.

The neighbor recalled police remaining at the property for hours, from around noon until 8 p.m. that Sunday. They said seeing the coroner’s vehicle made it apparent someone had died, but they did not learn until the next morning that it was Panettiere.

There was another detail the neighbor could not forget: They noticed two men “sitting outside the apartment with cops” during the response. “They looked like they were in shock, not speaking, and had their heads down,” the neighbor recalled.

The resident also believes the apartment was being used as a rental, something Page Six reported it had confirmed as an Airbnb.

The Scene Raised More Questions

As investigators began piecing together what happened, another detail from the scene drew attention. Page Six reported that 911 dispatch audio characterized the emergency as an apparent “overdose,” while Narcan was reportedly found at the scene on a mattress.

Narcan is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, but it remains unclear whether it was administered to Panettiere.

Crucially, neither the dispatch characterization nor the presence of Narcan establishes Panettiere’s official cause of death. Authorities have said that determination remains pending further investigation and additional studies.

The actress had previously spoken publicly about her history with opioid and alcohol addiction. In a 2022 interview, Panettiere said she had been offered what she described as “happy pills” before red-carpet appearances when she was just 15 years old, according to a Page Six report about her addiction struggles.

“They were to make me peppy during interviews,” she recalled at the time. “I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction.” She later described years of struggling with alcohol, substance abuse, depression and anxiety.

Panettiere also spoke candidly about the painful decision surrounding custody of her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. Speaking on the “On Purpose” podcast in May 2026, she pushed back against the idea that she had simply chosen to give up her daughter.

“The idea that anybody would think that I would just give away my child and be OK with it is heartbreaking,” she said. “It couldn’t be further from the truth. It became this horrible cycle for years of battling depression and anxiety and alcoholism and substance abuse and just me trying to find my way back.”

More recently, Panettiere had been promoting her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning.” At what would become her final public event, held at the Harmony Gold Theater in Los Angeles on May 26, a source who attended told Page Six that Panettiere’s speech appeared “slow and slurred at times.”

Panettiere Had Endured a Devastating Family Loss Years Before Her Death

She had also been carrying another profound loss. Panettiere’s younger brother, Jansen, died in February 2023 at the age of 28 from an undiagnosed heart condition. In a 2024 People interview, she described the devastating effect his death had on her.

“He was my only sibling, and it was my job to protect him,” Panettiere said. “When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul.” She added that experiencing something so catastrophic had changed the way she viewed everyday problems.

Against that intensely personal history, speculation around Panettiere’s final hours has inevitably drawn attention, but investigators are still withholding any definitive explanation for her death.

Then Came the Autopsy Finding

And that is where the autopsy findings become especially important. Although the examination has now been completed, officials have not yet established a cause or manner of death. The Coroner’s Office stated, “This investigation remains active and ongoing. No further details are available for release at this time.”

But the autopsy did answer one major question about Panettiere’s physical condition when she died:

“An autopsy was completed today. At autopsy, no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death.”

That still leaves the central mystery unresolved. Additional testing and investigation will now be needed before authorities can officially determine exactly what caused the star’s sudden death.

Panettiere’s passing was announced by her father, Skip, who described his daughter’s demise as a devastating loss.

“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen. We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss,” he added.

Hayden Panettiere’s death at just 36 has left questions that investigators are still working to answer, but attention is now turning to what was happening around the actress in the weeks and months before she died.

As her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson finally breaks his silence, several unsettling details have resurfaced, including a since-deleted remark he allegedly made online and claims that Panettiere’s own team had once discussed an intervention.

Brian Hickerson Breaks His Silence

Days after Panettiere’s death, Hickerson has now addressed the tragedy for the first time, although his response came through his attorney and offered little detail about what happened.

According to TMZ, Hickerson’s attorney, Sloan Ellis of the Ellis Hinton law firm, said, “Hayden’s death remains under investigation and it is important to allow that investigation to proceed.”

The statement continued, “As has been publicly reported, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play.” Ellis concluded, “Out of respect for Hayden’s loved ones and the ongoing investigation, there will be no further comment at this time.”

Ellis is a former federal prosecutor who has previously worked with the DEA and FBI, something TMZ noted amid reports that the DEA has joined the multi-agency investigation into Panettiere’s death. Hickerson and his older brother, Zach, were reportedly both at the South Carolina apartment when the actress was found unresponsive.

According to the outlet, Hickerson had been sleeping in another room, while Zach came inside and found Panettiere unresponsive in an armchair. First responders attempted to save her, but she was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. Hickerson reportedly became visibly emotional as the efforts to revive her came to an end.

Police have also said Hickerson showed officers a bag containing medications Panettiere had been taking before she died. As Ellis reiterated, authorities have said there are no signs of foul play, while the investigation into exactly what happened remains ongoing.

But as Hickerson’s brief statement emerged, another detail from just weeks earlier began attracting new attention.

A Since-Deleted Comment Resurfaces

A comment allegedly written by Hickerson in June has resurfaced following Panettiere’s death, and its wording is particularly striking considering their complicated history. Page Six reported that a user recently commented underneath an old Instagram selfie of Hickerson shared seven years ago, asking, “Some woman dates [sic] you???”

Hickerson allegedly replied, “Yes, it’s wonderful if she gets out of line I just Google myself and say hey stop it this is what I’m allegedly capable of [sic].”

The comment, which has since been deleted, appeared to reference Hickerson’s highly publicized legal history involving Panettiere.

His Instagram account has also reportedly been deactivated since news of her death broke. Additionally, it remains unclear whether Hickerson and Panettiere were romantically involved at the exact time the comment was posted.

However, they were photographed together in March 2026, and an August 16 police report referred to Panettiere as Hickerson’s “girlfriend.” Their relationship dated back to 2018 and was marked by several legal incidents.

Hickerson was arrested for domestic violence involving Panettiere in Los Angeles in May 2019. He was arrested again and ultimately faced eight counts relating to abusive incidents between May 2019 and January 2020.

Then, in April 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse, cohabitant, girlfriend, or child’s parent. He was sentenced to 45 days in jail, four years of probation, 52 domestic violence classes, and $500 in restitution. Panettiere was also granted a five-year protective order.

Hickerson had additionally been arrested in Wyoming on Valentine’s Day in February 2020 for domestic battery and interference with a police officer.

Court papers alleged he punched Panettiere “with a closed fist on the right side of her face.” Hickerson pleaded not guilty to those charges. Still, Panettiere later received another restraining order against him in July 2020.

Panettiere Had Spoken About Why She Forgave Him

Years later, however, the actress publicly discussed the complicated emotional cycle that kept pulling her back toward Hickerson.

Panettiere opened up about her experiences with domestic abuse in her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” released in May. She also discussed Hickerson during an appearance on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast.

“Once [Brian] was sober, that good part of him would be back, and he would see the damage he had done, and he was devastated and apologetic,” Panettiere said. She described their relationship as a “dizzying” cycle.

“And it seemed so honest and genuine that I was torn,” she continued. “I thought back to everything I’ve done wrong in the past and the forgiveness I was shown.” Those comments have taken on an especially poignant context in light of what sources have since claimed about Hickerson’s presence in her life during her final months.

Panettiere Reportedly Hired Security to Keep Brian Away

According to Us Weekly, Panettiere had reportedly established firm boundaries with Hickerson before her death, including hiring private security. A source told the publication that Panettiere sometimes helped Hickerson because he allegedly made her feel guilty by saying he was trying to rebuild his life but could not because she had “put him in jail.”

“But he would always take advantage of her and wouldn’t leave, so she hired private security to not only remove him, but to keep him away from her,” the source claimed.

Another source alleged Hickerson reentered Panettiere’s life earlier in 2026 after saying he needed somewhere to stay. “Brian said he needed to crash on Hayden’s couch. He told her that he had no money and nowhere to go because of the past criminal charges against him and he blamed that on her,” the source claimed.

According to the insider, Panettiere initially agreed to let him stay temporarily. But the source claimed Hickerson subsequently “wouldn’t leave,” leading Panettiere’s private security to become involved in removing him.

An even more unsettling allegation followed: The insider claimed that while Hickerson was living with Panettiere in Los Angeles, she discovered that “he had apparently set up cameras in her place.” The outlet also reported that the homeowners association at Panettiere’s condo building warned residents about Hickerson.

“It was at the same time that Hayden had her security remove Brian from her home and the security guard lived with her as well to make sure he stayed away,” the source stated. Panettiere’s former neighbor Mia Terrazzas also spoke about Hickerson’s presence around the actress’s residence.

In an Inside Edition interview, Terrazzas claimed she had been frightened of him. “He never stopped living at her place,” Terrazzas alleged. She further claimed, “There were times he ripped apart her bathroom, where he just took a sledgehammer at 5 in the morning.”

Terrazzas said she called 911 “at least half a dozen times” over disturbances at Panettiere’s home. According to Us Weekly, Hickerson was out of Panettiere’s life for several months earlier this year before circumstances changed over the summer.

There is also another person who says concerns about Panettiere had already become serious enough for people around her to consider taking action.

Panettiere’s Team Had Discussed an Intervention

Director Griff Furst, who worked with Panettiere before her death, recently revealed that conversations about helping the actress allegedly went much further than ordinary concern.

In an Instagram video, Furst said he had declined interview requests from media outlets because he wanted to explain his experience without having his words edited or taken out of context.

Furst said Panettiere had openly discussed her addiction struggles and noted that she began acting when she was just 11 months old. He explained that while working on a production, filmmakers can alter schedules, collect internal reports, and assign somebody to keep an eye on a performer if concerns arise.

Then he revealed what allegedly happened after filming ended. “When we wrapped, however, I stayed in touch with her team and what eventually got determined was that she might need an intervention and I was asked to participate, and I said yes,” Furst said.

However, according to him, “That intervention did not happen, at least not that I’m aware of.” Furst stressed that he had not been leading the effort and said it would not have been appropriate for him to do so.

He then addressed questions he said journalists had been asking him about “the man that Hayden brought with her,” whom he identified as Hickerson. Furst pointed to Hickerson’s publicly documented 2021 felony convictions and Panettiere’s previous restraining order.

He also stressed an important distinction: authorities have reported no indication of foul play, and Hickerson has not been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Panettiere’s death. “I wasn’t in South Carolina, I don’t know what happened,” Furst said.

He nevertheless offered his opinion based specifically on what he said he personally witnessed while working with Panettiere. Furst described seeing “somebody fighting to stay sober who deserved better company around them than what I observed.”

He added, “Hollywood has an extremely sad history of stars not getting the help that they deserve and our business has no fix for that.” Furst also said, “So our observations, they just get written down and thrown into a production report and then a year later you’re just reading the news.”

Furst ended by saying, “So I was very lucky to work with Hayden; I wish she was still here.” He also stressed that he had listed resources for people who may need help in similar situations in his caption.

A Legal Setback Came Just Three Days Before Panettiere Died

The renewed attention surrounding Hickerson also comes after one of his attempts to change his criminal record was rejected remarkably close to Panettiere’s death. According to TMZ, a judge denied Hickerson’s request to reduce his prior felony domestic violence convictions to misdemeanors and to have the convictions expunged.

The ruling came on Thursday, August 13 — three days before Panettiere died. Prosecutors opposed his requests, and Judge Olivia Rosales denied the motions. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the ruling after Page Six first reported the development.

Hickerson’s convictions stemmed from his April 2021 no-contest pleas to two felony counts following incidents involving Panettiere between May 2019 and January 2020. Although he was sentenced to 45 days in jail, TMZ reported that he served 33 days. His sentence also included probation, domestic violence classes, and a five-year restraining order.

Months before Panettiere’s death, Hickerson had publicly suggested that he still imagined a future with her. In a May interview, he said he continued to think about marrying Panettiere and had not given up hope that they could eventually reunite.

Panettiere reportedly laughed off the idea of marrying him when she was approached at LAX that same month. Yet reports indicate the pair later reconnected before her death.

Old Alleged Texts Reveal Another Troubling Chapter

As scrutiny of their history has intensified, alleged messages Hickerson sent Panettiere following his 2020 arrest have also resurfaced. According to TMZ, court documents from Hickerson’s criminal case contained alleged threatening communications sent after his Wyoming domestic battery arrest.

A probable cause affidavit reportedly stated that Panettiere’s lawyer contacted Wyoming authorities because Hickerson had allegedly communicated with the actress despite a court order prohibiting contact.

Her lawyer reportedly provided authorities with emails containing screenshots of text messages, missed calls, and short video clips. One alleged text from Hickerson read, “Time to go to war I guess.” Another allegedly stated, “After Wyoming and LA disappears [sic] so do the videos.”

One of the longer alleged messages read, “Even if i sit in a jail cell for ten years. All of the stuff that is vaulted overseas with my people will come out the second I step foot into prison. And all that does is hurt your name while simultaneously clearing my name. And at that point who actually cares [sic]?”

Other alleged messages reportedly included, “Say something Hayd, so I don’t get defensive and start firing off emails to people to get ready.” Another stated, “I thought his legal stuff would magically disappear… we gotta figure something out, buddy.”

Investigators believed the messages showed an effort to intimidate Panettiere into dropping the case. One alleged text said, “It is very simple, it is a very simple fix, between me and you, you gotta make one phone call [sic].”

Another reportedly read, “I don’t want to go to court, for you. I will be [expletive] fine in court, trust me, it’s for you.” Hickerson was initially facing roughly a year behind bars in connection with the Wyoming incident, but the judge suspended the jail sentence and ordered him to serve a year of probation.

Questions Remain About Panettiere’s Final Hours

Panettiere was found unresponsive at a South Carolina Airbnb on Sunday, August 16. Authorities responded to a report involving an unresponsive woman in cardiac arrest following a suspected overdose, according to reporting surrounding the investigation.

Life-saving measures were attempted but were unsuccessful, and Panettiere was pronounced dead at approximately 2:30 p.m. An autopsy found no signs of trauma that would have contributed to her death, and toxicology results are still being awaited to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Hickerson was photographed in South Carolina three days later alongside his brother Zach, who reportedly discovered Panettiere while Hickerson was elsewhere inside the Airbnb. Police have said their initial investigation found no indication of foul play, and no one has accused Hickerson of causing Panettiere’s death.

For now, his attorney says he will not be discussing the case further while investigators continue their work.

But between Panettiere’s reported decision to hire security, the intervention her team allegedly considered, Hickerson’s legal setback days before her death, and that since-deleted comment about what he was “allegedly capable of,” the circumstances surrounding the final months of her life are receiving renewed scrutiny.

Jonathan McKinsey’s name became tied to a shocking East Bay tragedy in the final days of September 2026. But away from the circumstances of his death was a nearly two-decade technology career, a passion for teaching, three children, and personal posts that now carry an entirely different weight.

Among the glimpses he left behind is one particularly poignant family message — written just weeks before his death.

Jonathan McKinsey’s Life Was Taken at a California Park

McKinsey, 40, was fatally shot on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin, California. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, police and witnesses found him with multiple gunshot wounds shortly after 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the city park, which sits beside Dublin’s police department and library.

Video shared with the outlet reportedly showed McKinsey lying behind the open trunk of a car, with blood visible around his head. He was pronounced dead in the parking lot. Witness Assad Razawi told the outlet that he heard five or six gunshots before seeing McKinsey fall. Razawi said a man and woman he believed were connected to the shooting then walked away at a normal pace.

Authorities arrested two suspects just outside the park minutes later, as the suspects reportedly fully complied with police orders. Authorities identified them as 76-year-old Shouyong Zhang and 76-year-old Shili Chen, a married couple who police said were McKinsey’s mother- and father-in-law.

They were arrested on suspicion of murder, child endangerment, and conspiring to commit a crime and were being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail. An arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday, while the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said it was reviewing the investigation. Dublin police thanked witnesses and other community members, saying their cooperation was “critical to the swift arrest of the suspects.”

Authorities had not announced a motive as of Monday afternoon. That unanswered question is especially significant because, behind the scenes, McKinsey and his wife had spent months locked in an increasingly contentious family dispute.

He Was a Director of Engineering for the New York Times Games

At the time of his death, McKinsey was Director of Engineering, Games Player Experience at The New York Times. His LinkedIn profile presented a career spanning close to 20 years across software engineering, product strategy, management, education, and engineering leadership.

In his “About” section, McKinsey wrote that he had nearly two decades of experience in hands-on technical positions involving software engineering and product strategy. He also said he had more than eight years of people-management experience. His recent New York Times position began in December 2025.

According to the profile, McKinsey led a multidisciplinary engineering organization made up of 22 engineers and three engineering managers across three teams, including front-end, full-stack, backend, iOS, and Android engineers. Before becoming director, his profile listed him as Senior Engineering Manager for Games Player Experience from January to December 2025.

It also listed a previous role as Senior Engineering Manager for Games Platform beginning in January 2023, where he said he led a front-end web and backend API platform engineering organization consisting of 17 engineers and one engineering manager. His approach to leadership appeared to extend beyond job titles.

McKinsey wrote that he believed a leader’s job was to build an environment in which team members could “bring their whole selves to work and thrive.” He also emphasized transparency, shared leadership, experimentation, and giving people credit for their work. As an engineering leader, he said he pushed teams to build sustainable products while considering testability, maintainability, observability, and security upfront.

His Career Included Splunk, UKG, Coursera, Oracle, and More

McKinsey’s professional path stretched well beyond The New York Times. From July 2021 until January 2023, he worked as an Engineering Manager at Splunk. Before that, he spent more than three years with UKG (Ultimate Kronos Group). His profile listed him first as a Staff Software Engineer from February 2018 to January 2019 and later as an Engineering Manager from January 2019 through July 2021.

During that period, he also co-founded McKinsey Learn, a self-employed venture that his profile listed from January 2019 until December 2020. Before UKG, McKinsey spent nearly two years at Coursera as a Product Strategy Manager, from April 2016 through February 2018. He previously worked at Oracle as a Senior Software Engineer from January 2015 until April 2016.

Earlier still, McKinsey worked for Hewlett Packard Enterprise as a Systems Software Engineer II between November 2010 and April 2014. But his professional history started even before that. While attending Georgia Tech, he served as a Head Teaching Assistant from May 2006 until March 2010. He also spent more than two years as a Software Engineer intern at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, from January 2007 through August 2009.

Education and Teaching Were a Major Part of His Life

McKinsey earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology, attending from August 2005 through May 2010 and graduating with honors. His listed activities included serving as a College of Computing Ambassador, College of Computing Mentor, Freshman Seminar Peer Leader, and FASET Freshman Orientation Leader.

He later earned a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley, studying there from August 2013 until May 2015. An older professional biography from his time at Ultimate Software described McKinsey as someone deeply interested in the intersection of computer science and education.

The bio said his master’s studies focused on that intersection, particularly massive open online courses. It also described his enthusiasm for teaching technology to a broad range of people, from providing digital-literacy education to senior citizens to teaching programming to underrepresented minorities.

McKinsey was said to be especially interested in issues affecting disadvantaged populations. And amid all the technical accomplishments, the bio included a far more personal detail: in his spare time, he enjoyed cooking for his family.

Jonathan McKinsey and Candice Jang Had Three Children

That family eventually became central to a painful legal battle. Public records cited by the Chronicle showed that McKinsey and Candice Jang married in Harris County, Texas, in 2011. The couple had three young children.

By late 2025, however, their marriage had broken down into competing allegations of domestic abuse, restraining-order petitions, criminal proceedings, divorce litigation, and a dispute over how much time McKinsey could spend with the children. The Mercury News reported that the custody case was scheduled to return to court on Friday, October 2.

McKinsey had petitioned for divorce in December 2025. As recently as late August 2026, he was asking the court to expand his visitation. “I miss our children deeply and am pleading with this court to allow me more time with them, and potentially unsupervised time with the children,” McKinsey wrote in one filing, according to the outlet.

At that point, his visits were being supervised, and he was seeking to have that requirement removed. Jang opposed that request, writing in her own filing that McKinsey “has proven that he is incapable of controlling his anger and his abuse of our children when left with the children unsupervised.” Those remaining allegations were being argued through the courts.

Both Spouses Made Serious Allegations Against Each Other

The custody battle did not involve accusations from only one side. Jang had obtained a domestic violence prevention order after filing for one in October 2025. According to court records cited by the Chronicle, she alleged that McKinsey had physically, verbally, and emotionally abused her and their children for years.

Her filing reportedly described more than a dozen alleged incidents occurring between November 2020 and July 2025. One such incident reportedly involved a claim that McKinsey had struck her six-year-old son in the face with an open hand.

In another alleged incident, Jang said McKinsey pushed their son in February 2022 when he thought the child was playing too rough with his sister, which resulted in injuries. Jang also told investigators about a separate alleged 2018 incident in which she said McKinsey grabbed her arm and left a bruise, and said he had emotionally abused her mother.

Jang wrote, “The abuse that happened over the past 17 years has caused permanent damage to my mental health and physical health.” She continued, “I would like a restraining order to protect myself and my three children, as well as my mother from future abuse.”

McKinsey faced two misdemeanor charges in Alameda County involving alleged child abuse: cruelty to a child by endangering health and corporal injury to a child. The Chronicle reported that a deputy’s declaration said authorities had also once found a two-year-old child unattended in an upstairs bedroom after McKinsey allegedly left to go shopping.

McKinsey pleaded not guilty and had been released from jail subject to conditions that included completing 12 parenting classes, according to the Chronicle.

The Mercury News additionally reported that he had been released on $50,000 bail and was attempting to enter a mental health diversion program. Successful completion would have resulted in the charges being dismissed.

McKinsey Also Accused His Wife and In-Laws of Abuse

McKinsey disputed Jang’s account. In December 2025, he sought a restraining order of his own and alleged that Jang had abused him over a period stretching back more than 15 years. His allegations included a claim that Jang struck him with a frying pan in 2013 and that she verbally denigrated their children.

He also made allegations involving Jang’s parents. McKinsey was transgender, and according to court documents cited by the Mercury News, he alleged in his petition that Jang’s mother, Chen, had directed very harsh anti-LGBTQ+ slurs toward him and one of the children. McKinsey also alleged that Jang mistreated him while he was undergoing medical procedures connected to his transition.
