Porizkova responded with practical calm, asking whether he had used American Express because it offered purchase protection. The ring was eventually found in Greenstein’s bag inside the car and finally reached her finger.

Their travels after the engagement led them back to Villa Crespi, a 19th-century Moorish Revival hotel Porizkova had first visited for a photoshoot roughly 30 years earlier. She and Greenstein had returned together in 2024, and they soon agreed that the romantic property should host their reception.

The Bride Refused to Wear White

According to Vogue, Porizkova knew from the beginning that an ordinary bridal gown would not suit her. “So I guess I got what I wanted!” she added.

Greenstein requested the coordinating veil, while Porizkova wore a flower made from the gown’s fabric in her hair. Her jewelry carried a personal connection: two small teardrop earrings given to her by her sons for her 60th birthday.

The Groom Traded Logo T-Shirts for Bespoke Wool

Greenstein needed more help with his own outfit. Before meeting Porizkova, he said his usual “comedy writer’s uniform” consisted of jeans and logo T-shirts, and he was not certain he even owned a respectable suit.

Two friends began pulling flowers from the ground and constructing an emergency replacement under the watch of city official Roberta Mattioli. Mattioli allowed the rescue operation to continue.

But they did not meet again for nine months. When Stewart finally left a message on her landline asking to see her, Lancaster arrived for their reunion completely covered in brown pleather trousers, a rollneck, and a buttoned jacket because she wanted him to understand there was more to discover.

That decision belongs to Benny, her very large and elderly dog. Once he demands breakfast, Stockard feeds him and makes a strong pot of coffee. A dog walker then takes Benny outside, permitting Stockard to return to bed and even write in her diary. She considers that her ideal morning.

Her next stop is usually Pilates and weight training. Still, she cheerfully admitted in The Times in August 2026 that her favorite exercise days are the ones when she skips the whole business.

That lighthearted routine conceals the painful reason Stockard eventually wanted a smaller, more secluded life. The death of her longtime partner, producer and cinematographer Dan Gillham, whom she called Daniel, affected her more deeply than she first understood.

“My partner, Daniel, died in 2014 and it was more devastating than I realised; it had a lag effect,” she said. The grief did not arrive in one clean, unmistakable wave. It settled in gradually, changing Stockard’s relationship with the home and habits she had once shared with Daniel.

“The pattern of my life shifted, so I shifted my life from Maine.”

That realization ultimately carried her across the Atlantic. It also explains why her retreat was not simply an actress growing tired of Hollywood or searching for a picturesque European adventure.

Her attitude is refreshingly simple: this is who she is, and people can take it or leave it. At 82, she sounds far more interested in living comfortably than auditioning for public approval.

Politics Gave Her Another Reason to Look Abroad

Stockard’s move to London also loosely coincided with her disappointment in the direction of American politics. For the woman who played first lady Abbey Bartlet on “The West Wing,” the change felt especially stark.

She began portraying Abbey in 1999, shortly before the United States entered George W. Bush’s first administration. The cast had opportunities to observe Washington and found a level of thoughtful, principled discussion that Stockard believes is missing in 2026.

Modern viewers, she said, now watch “The West Wing” and marvel at fictional politicians who appeared to possess even a small measure of integrity. A series once praised for its idealism can now look almost like a relic from another political culture.

Abbey was never written as a ceremonial first lady content to stand quietly beside her husband. She was a physician, a formidable thinker, and a woman with no interest in indulging fools.

Stockard considers Abbey the character closest to her actual personality. Series creator Aaron Sorkin apparently reached the same conclusion. Aaron told Stockard that he had written Abbey around the qualities he saw in her.

Four Husbands Marked Four Different Lives

Before Daniel, Stockard married four times. Her first husband was Walter Channing Jr., whom she met while they were college students. Walter attended Harvard University, while Stockard studied at Radcliffe College, then Harvard’s coeducational institution for women.

They married on June 18, 1963, at St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church in Sherborn, Massachusetts. Their divorce followed in 1967. The relationship nevertheless left a permanent trace.

Born Susan Williams Antonia Stockard, she kept Walter’s surname and eventually stopped using Susan professionally, creating the stage name Stockard Channing. Stockard married writer and producer David Debin during the same year her marriage to Paul ended. David worked on “The Newlywed Game” and wrote the screenplay for “Dick Tracy.” They established a production company and collaborated professionally on “The Stockard Channing Show.”

David served as producer while Stockard starred. Their marriage lasted four years. David died on October 2, 2025. Stockard’s fourth husband was David Rawle, another man named David about whom far less is publicly known. The couple attended the 14th annual Met Gala together.

They were married for eight years, from 1980 until 1988. After that divorce, Stockard never walked down the aisle again.

Daniel Occupied a Category of His Own

Stockard and Daniel spent more than two decades together without marrying. By 2006, she had already decided that a fifth wedding would feel unnecessary.

“I do think it’s possible to be monogamous long term,” she said in a Guardian interview. “I think it’s because whoever it is becomes your favourite person in the world.”

Her divorces had taught her that nobody enters a marriage intending to end it. Still, after living with Daniel for more than 20 years, formalizing the relationship would have felt “quite silly.“
